Monarch Airlines

Postby costakid » Sat Sep 30, 2017 12:43 pm

It looks like they are in trouble again. Staff have been asked to work unpaid overtime if it all goes wrong to help people get home.

You're right, it doesn't look good for them at all and hasn't done for some time.

End of an era. 50 years trading but didn't move on in the modern world of airlines.
I was a gold card holder for around 5 years and Monarch were my favourite airline but I haven't used them for years. The attraction was a half descent meal, free drink and a newspaper. They went to a no frills airline but without the no frills prices. Shame.

The founding brothers sold out in 2014 and it's been downhill since then. Glad my forthcoming trip to Gatwick was booked Easyjet and not Monarch .... mind you, still time for Easyjet to do a Ryanair!

If industry was football Monarch could have negotiated transfer fees for their crew to Ryanair.....

I suppose if it failed then some of their pilots and cabin crew could be accommodated at Ryanair.
Sadly not an option, Monarch were an Airbus operator, Ryanair have a Boeing fleet.
Can't see O'Leary paying for the conversion courses (thousands per pilot)

I too liked Monarch above the rest, shame about their ticket prices, once over they were competitive but in the last few years i thought they were expensive and we stopped booking flights with them..

That's true but I don't think they can be current on more than one "Family" therefore they can fly A320 series, and as they are nearly identical, A330 and A340 series too, but not Boeing series as they are fundamentally different. There will be some re-training involved therefore cost. That said Ryanair are, it seems, recruiting this week at the various Monarch bases.

A few days in the sim and they can convert. The main difference with Airbus and Boeing is that Airbus is joystick and fly by wire. With Boeing you actually feel like you are flying as you still push and pull back leavers. Still all automatic but the feel is completely different.

And a few days in the classroom as they have to learn the very different systems, not to my engineering level but to a level that they can understand what is going on.
I think conversion takes about two weeks, maybe more and it will cost, which was really my point, O'Leary does not like cost.

It seems like a no-brainer - cost and pilots, no cost and no pilots!
I suppose the trolley-dollies will need a course on how to wheel different trolleys?

Ryanair has been spotted pilot training at Prestwick airport.
I lost my holiday to Macedonia yesterday. I had booked from Inverness to Luton on Easyjet. Then 3 hours later Luton to Macedonia. The next plane would have been on Wednesday.
Easyjet were over 3 hours delay at Inverness - the usual 'will be 3/4 of an hour delay' and so on. So we had to go back home and lost the holiday

Maybe Ryanair could pick up a few Airbus aircraft cheap, along with the crews and ground staff.......

What's the procedure for getting a refund for a Spain-UK flight that was booked with a Spanish credit card? All the advice I've seen is for UK-based customers.
