Re: British-style Bacon
I asked for advice on this site some months ago and since then I have been curing my own bacon and ham. Curing salts come from Butchers Sundries, I use the Easicure Bacon and Ham mix. It is so quick and easy, 6 days curing in fridge then ready to cook or freeze. I have a ready supply of bacon anytime.

I know, I know, it's a bit of a a trek, but, if you're prepared to travel to Sitio de Calahonda, east of Fuengirola on the N340, go up the hill almost to the top of the "strip" and you will find a minimarket which is an expats culinary dream, can't remember the name but it's almost the last locale on the right.
As a good 30-40% of the population of Calahonda are Brits this guy has found a market niche, you can get walls Bacon, walls sausages, "proper" black pudding, kingsmill sliced bread, Heinz baked beans, chutneys and almost anything else you can think of that goes on an English table, reasonable prices and if you're prepared to buy in bulk I'm sure it's worth the trouble, whenever I'm in La Carihuela I take the trouble to stock up there!

Sadly, just the same old Spanish stuff, not the UK-supplied as previous...peteroldracer wrote:Tomorrow will tell if this applies to Velez-Málaga.....

Re: British-style Bacon
Success! The Velez-Malaga Lidl had both smoked and unsmoked British bacon in on Saturday! €1.99 for a 200gm pack (8 rashers). Cut thinner than ideal but that is nit-picking.
Sunday brunch was a baguette stuffed with smoked bacon and hot tinned tomato....washed down with a mug of Tetley tea.....delicious! My world is now a better place...

Peteroldrasher,
Good to hear that you are happy that you've been able to save your bacon, and all you need now is to have a parcel delivered to your home on time and you will be as 'Happy as a Pig in Sh.....poo'....
Regards,
Gordon.

Don't know where you live but Bennies (he's a Pakistani) on the strip in Calahonda has a massive range of brit stuff (considering that about 75% of the population of Calahonda are brits it's no surprise) he has:walls sausages, black pudding (in slices) best back bacon, Hollands pies and all kinds of other stuff (inc lucozade) that you may be yearning for,it may be a trip for some of you but if you want to stock up he's your man, and, by the way, non of it out of date !

Lidl now has smoked back bacon from the UK. Different packaging, but it looks very good.

Re: British-style Bacon
This seems to come and go - there was none in our local Lidl yesterday. We have found the smoked version to be very high in salt, and despite assurances from shop staff are convinced it has been frozen, preventing us from freezing it for storage. Iceland bacon is ok, though sometimes produces foam that must be cooked away, again raising suspicions of having been frozen.

Re: British-style Bacon
Personally I now prefer Spanish bacon, maybe try the British smoked bacon , for a change.....but we can live without it..

Re: British-style Bacon
I use the Spanish smoked bacon a lot for cooking in things, but it is too fatty with no lean meal for other uses.

Re: British-style Bacon
I like British style bacon but I also like the taste of the Spanish version as well. Carrefour has it in their frozen counter but I usually don't bother and buy Spanish.
Agree it's a bit more fatty but as I don't eat it very much anyway, I'm not really worried about that.
