Just booked my ITV and got this message,

A partir del 15/09/2017, será obligatorio acreditar el seguro del vehículo al pasar ITV.

although I understand what it says, not sure what I have to do, do I need to take my insurance documents with me?

I still keep mine in the car.

Although you would hope that the ITV station will be able to access the insurance database, the rule in Spain is take everything you might be asked for and lots of stuff you think you will never need. With duplicates.

Recently (August) saw a similar notice displayed on the video screen at Algarrobo ITV station when I arrived there. Had the docs in the car, but was never asked for them. Maybe operator discretion, or dependent on an automatic on-line check. Worth taking anyway - would be awful to screw up an ITV appointment because of lack of paperwork.

Surely we all carry these (or at least copies) in the car anyway?

No, I don't carry a copy - it is no longer required if stopped by the police.

El Cid

Is it the car insurance that you don't need to carry a copy of any more?

This blog I follow reported on it a couple of weeks back, and the stupidity of the decision!

In the event of an accident, I would fill in the European Accident Statement that Linea Directa give me. There is no need to give the other driver details of your insurance, just your registration number. His insurance company and the police, if they attend the accident, will have access to your insurance details.

As I understand it from the local press; as from Oct 1st, in Malaga Province, you have to present your insurance docs when you check in for your ITV.

The sign at the ITV centre did say something like that, so maybe so.
Sid, understood. Handy to carry them, though, in case it's necessary to call your own insurers from the scene of an accident.

You might choose to carry that sort of information but all the numbers would be in my phone, in fact I have copies of all my documents in my phone. I was recently stopped by Trafico and had no documents at all. They were happy with what was on my phone.

When you used to have to carry the papers, details of the policy were not required, just the receipt for payment of the premium.

The itv don't need to see paperwork, it's on their computers, and they will itv a non insured car too, but you get a red stamp "invalid without insurance" or some such.

Silly rule isn't it.... !!

Just had a look at the cita site as mine is due its first ITV next year . A couple of questions. Can you chose your own date or does it just give you the next available. Out of intrest i put in my details and december 10th came up.so quite a wait.couldnt see anything to change it. And it gave me the option of spanish or dutch! In the languages. No english? Also is it periodica you click on?

The date they give you is just a suggestion, not the first available. You can call up a list and select from that.

Yes it seems to now only give a choice of Spanish or Dutch. It used to be available in English.
Yes it is periodica you click on.
When it gives you a date and time you can, as peteroldracer said, bring up a calendar and select your own date and time from the available times.
Cheers

Update:
ITV yesterday, the young lady did not want to see the insurance docs.
The centre, Guadalhorce, was much quieter than last year, there was only a 15 minute delay for my appointment, very, very thorough though. The car is 25 years old , I think they were trying to shake it to bits! We passed tho...excellent.

ITV these days is a very slick and efficient process, at least here at the Algarrobo station. Timed appointments working really well, and a long (presumably double-shift) working day.
Really professional: UK could learn a thing or two on this.
