Safe Weed Killer

Postby Ricasso » Mon May 21, 2018 8:57 am

Does anyone know of a safe and effective weed killer for a very large area? I have seen some organic remedies but they would only be good for a small garden path. I have 2 dogs so it must be safe. I've seen very clean, weed-free banks with vines and young avocado trees on them which are obviously unaffected by whatever's keeping the weeds at bay but I'm sure the land-owner hasn't been on their hands and knees pulling up the weeds by their roots!!
Anyone any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Roundup is good. Once it has dried on the leaves (about an hour) it is safe for animals. You can only buy it in 500ml bottles now unless you have a special operators licence. Strictly speaking, you are not supposed to spray it without the licence but rather depends on where you are spraying.

It was covered before here http://andalucia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=37225

As above from Sid but if you go to an Agricultural Merchant, get "Touchdown", it is just as good as Roundup ( exactly the same chemicals) and a good bit cheaper. I buy it in 5 litres for less than 30€ but I am a registered user. It does come in Litre pots as well.

My local merchant (nearly local to OP on Torrox Costa) will sell me Rotundo 360 5L for about 20€ - its Glyphosphate which is Roundup.
First time in there I asked him for "Spanish Roundup"
PM for directions.

Yes, you can get it easily enough, it is the larger sizes that may present a problem.

Not sure what you mean with safe. Glyphosate is definitely not harmless but it is one of the safer ones. If you are going to use it close to any real plants like avocado trees I do NOT recommend it, not only because the residuals entering the fruit but it is very easy to harm the plants with this stuff even if you are a professional with professional equipment.

The question of safety refers to the original post about whether is was safe for dogs, which it is unless they eat the recently sprayed, still wet, plants.

If it answers the question I don't use glyphosate anywhere within 3 meters of my plants and only during very low wind conditions (and I am a professionally accredited applicator).

Good for you!

I have been using it for years and the only thing I have killed are weeds. I spray it underneath my roses etc and they are all thriving.

Happy professional applicating!

Is that a tiny amount of sarcasm I sense under that "I don't understand the difference between a potted plant and a ground rooted plant"? You do understand that there is more than actual monetary value in a plant? Who cares about your roses in a discussion about avocado trees, a rose is like 3 eur.

Have you ever raised a tree in your life?

For those who doesn't understand Sids level of sarcasm here: the stuff you buy at Bricomart is NOT the agro strength Glyphosate that you get at the Agrotienda. If you spray with agricultural strength near your plants and you have a slight wind drift you WILL harm your plants. Last year I killed 8 tomatoes by glyphosate wind drift when I forgot to close a ventilation flap on one of my greenhouses.

Actually, yes. At the last count - about 100. On top of that we have 100 established almond trees.

What is wrong with the f-cking echo chamber mentality here?

"Oh this guy is trying to save somebody's plants, f-ck that guy right?" Lets add credibility by disrespecting the only person in the thread that is accredited.

The dose you use with agricultural strength to kill everything is roughly 4 ml per m2. A few aerosol droplets is enough to kill a plant.

Flexo, calm down. You might be an accredited weed killer sprayer but that doesn't give you the right to be rude and offensive to people.

I think this thread has run its course now and the OP has had his question answered.

Thread is now closed.
