I want to arrange to have a regular annual health check , I'm over 65 years old, does anybody know if this is available on the Spanish National Health? I've never been offered one.....If there is such a thing what do I ask for ?
Thanks in advance

They will give you a blood test and ECG if you ask your doctor. They will normally insist you have one every year.

Thank you ..
Don't they do a health check that checks blood pressure , diabetes, cholesterol and various other things as well as a blood test ? Not sure what its called in Spain , similar to the NHS health checks available in the UK?

A normal blood test shows cholesterol and glucose levels and a lot more. They will also take your blood pressure and from the results set up other relevant checks.

Yup - just go to your local GP at the Centro Salud and ask. It may be up to you to remember to do it each year, if you want an annual check. Otherwise, if they find anything interesting, they will of course follow it through, and then may ask you to do six monthly or annual checks depending on the problem. Since most folk seem to have interesting levels of cholesterol, for example, you may get regular check ups, just to see how the levels are doing. Each "blood test" seems to include ALL the regular checks you could think of, and if you have previous history, or particular worries (eg suspect prostate problems ..) they will add them in on their request to the lab. Urine test is fairly standard, especially first time of asking. All free and accessible - make appointment with GP, he writes up the request, then an appointment with a nurse to take the blood and check your urine sample (pot previously provided), it all goes off to the lab, and you have another appointment with the GP, usually after a week for the results to come through, and he/she will go through it with you - referrals to specialists if required then follow - or it is a case of come back for further tests at such a time, or see you next year ...
We find that they dont actually do the blood pressure in our Centro, as it is available on a machine in all the chemist shops (Farmacia) for a minimal charge!

You can buy home blood pressure machines quite cheaply.
Handy piece of kit for most homes.

I've had my blood pressure checked at two local farmacias, and they did not charge in either of them.
