Passport validity

Postby Torrox_campo » Wed Dec 26, 2018 12:31 pm

Happy New Year to all at A.com.
I have a little question and the answer will help decide to apply for a new passport now or later on.
I plan to go to our house in Spain at the end of January and return to the UK in the middle of May.
My UK passport expires on 30th July 2019.
Would there be problem at the borders as my passport has only two and half months to run?
Thank you for any advice.

in the unlikely event of a no deal 2.5 months wouldn't be acceptable. 6 months is the rule for an EU member.

My (limited) advice would be to get a new passport and then you'll have no worries.

As of the 1st January my passport still has 7 months.
As end of January my passport still has over 6 months.
When I leave spain for UK my passport will have two and half months left to run.

Thank for your comment. When I go to Spain I have still more than 6 months. It's when I return to the UK it will have two and half months left.

its a bit of a grey area because when you travel we are in the EU still so you are all legal. When you travel back you will have less than the legal requirement but as you are heading home they are not going to stop you travelling. As the remaining moths are not added to your new passport you may want to Tavel on your old one.

I believe this is now correct:-
"Time left on an existing passport is added to your new one - up to a maximum of 9 months."

They have stopped that until Brexit is sorted.

OK.
It was correct when I applied for a new passport for my Son and Grandson earlier this year.

The consulate advice that there are no changes in visa requirements between the EU and UK during the implementation period of 30 March 2019 and 31 December 2020. In the event of any change this will be published on the government website

Typical when i have just applied for a new passport. Seems they brought the new rule in on the quiet in sept.it was only uncovered by people contacting money saving expert website about their new passports having no added months. All to do with conforming to schengin rules about passports not been valid for more than ten years as machines wont except them. Nice 5% increase for a standard passport

I got a new passport earlier this year to cover the six month rule for a trip to St Petersburg — which never happened in the end. My new passport runs from 23 March 2018 to 23 September 2028. It seems I got in the 'extra' months just in time.

Regardless of the rules, some airlines will not accept passports with less than six months
