Riogordo

Riogordo is another very pretty Axarquía village in the vicinity of Lake Viñuela with the dramatic mountain backdrop of the Sierra del Rey and Alto de Gomer. This is an area of stunning natural beauty.

Here, the contrast between the flat plains and rugged mountains is great, making for a memorable trip. It is worth noting that the importance of the location of this village (which sits right between Antequera and the Malaga mountains) made it the perfect midway point between those two towns throughout history.

Ancient tombs dating back to Phoenician times have been discovered at the foot of the Sierra del Rey Mountains. Roman remains were also found, demonstrating the importance of this village over the centuries. Around the 17 th century livestock farming and sweet wine production began to bring great prosperity to this village.

During Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) there is a very special event at Riogordo. Over 400 villagers take part in an amazing re-enactment of the life and death of Jesus. It is described as “natural theatre” and there is capacity for 6,000 people to witness this incredible spectacle. All the participants are dressed in the period clothing from the time of Jesus. Dramatic scenes, including Jesus on the Cross, the Sermon on the Mount, the Last Supper, Judas Betraying the Lord, etc. are carried out with great sensitivity and solemnity. This event, set in the natural landscape is held on Holy Friday and Saturday each year at 16:00 hrs. For more information on this event, phone the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall), Junta Organizadora de “El Paso de Riogordo” at:
