Game of Thrones FILMED IN OSUNA's BULLRING

Text and photography by Fiona Flores Watson

HBO filmed a key scene from Series 5 of the hit TV show Game of Thrones in the town, specifically the bullring (which is no longer used for the such events). The spectacular fight scene - with amazing special effects, including dragons - takes place in episode 9, first broadcast in June 2015.

Many of the town's inhabitants worked as extras on the 12-day shoot in October 2014. The bullring was standing in for Danzak's Pit in Meereen city, ruled by Daenerys Targaryen, also known as Mother of Dragons or Khaleesi. The director, David Nutter, said they were the best group of extras in the series, always in a good mood despite long days and searing temperatures (they brought umbrellas to shade themselves); at the end of the shoot, each extra received a special Tshirt. In June 2015 the town's Mayoress unveiled a plaque at the bullring with the 500 names inscribed.

In November 2015 the 'Salon de Hielo y Fuego' (Ice and Fire Hall), consisting of two rooms, opened at the Osuna Museum (Calle Sevilla 37, entrance 2 euros). The rooms, on two different floors, featuring photos and memorabilia from the Game of Thrones filming. This includes a number of photographs from the shoot, as well as models and costumes. You can see coins, an Unsullied costume, Robb Stark's sword, Loras Tyrell's helmet. the Hound's helmet, a Sons of the Harpy mask, a Mereen lady's costume, a Whitewalker model, and a Night Watcher's cape, which you can even try on and have your photo taken.

The cast's restaurant of choice while staying in Osuna was Casa Curro in Plazuela Salitre, where Emilia Clarke (Khaleesi)'s birthday was celebrated. Lyssie's blog provides an interesting account of the birthday party. The restaurant even has a special menu of Game of Thrones character-themed montaditos. They stayed at Hotel Palacio de Marques de Gomera.

In the video below two fans head to Osuna during the filming of the series to explore the location, and see the cast arriving at the hotel.
