History Murcia Covera airport

Construction works began on the Murcia San Javier airport in July 2008 and work finished in 2013. It was originally envisaged as a private airport managed by a consortium of seven companies, led by Sacyr Concesiones. However due to the resesion the project was put on hold and the government battled with the constructor in the courts over the rights and payment of debt. The opening was delayed many times and it was not clear whether it would be run privately or by the Murcia Regional government. In May 2015 Corvera airport management contract was again withdrawn from Aeromur, the management company.

In November 2017, the Spanish government suddenly anounced that it would be awarding AENA the contract of managing Corvera airport - whereby San Javier airport would be closed to passengers and flights transferred. It was confirmed in April 2018 that Corvera would open on 15th January 2019.
