Re: Bilbao to Fuengirola

Well I've cycled it, Bilbao - Malaga direct and never went anywhere near Madrid. It's shame that you intend to use the autovias, central Spain has some wonderful places to see and spectacular and desolate scenery. The N630 is a great road.

Re: Torremolinos is quiet at night

I anticipated a dump, yet was pleasantly surprised, I would not go so far as to call it beautiful, but it was pleasant enough. I do think there is an opportunity to be a CDS Sitges and did not think the gay area was seedy at night, it appeared entirely "normal", just woman-free! I suppose that if I ...

Re: Torremolinos is quiet at night

I'd like to add to this........... I last went to Torremolinos in about 1992, as a young man, I don't have fond memories of it. It was full of young, loud, drunk, Brit, provincial louts..............like me. This summer we used a friends apartment, 10th - 24th August, me now a middle aged,...

Re: Can UK O.A.P'S Survive in Spain On Basic Pensions.?

Flitting between the 2 I have noticed that "cheap" food is far more expensive in Spain, but because it's inexpensive to start with, there is not much difference in the total shopping cost. My MIL & FIL live on just UK state pensions in El Palo. They rent out their UK house which covers the Spanish r...

Re: Salamanca & La Coruña

Salamanca is Hotel city! Go to the Plaza Mayor area and choose what you like best. I cycled from the North to Malaga last June and these are places that I'd like to see again. Seville - You've probably been. Merida - A lovely town with jaw dropping Roman architecture. Trujillo - Like going back to c...

Re: The Great Spanish Crash

This year I cycled from Bilbao to Malaga, I took my time to have a good look around..... The North cost Gijon to Bilbao and up to 25 miles inland appears "normal", South of Seville appears "normal" as does the CDS. Large towns like Valladollid, Salamanca and Merida appear to be functioning "normally...

Through Spain

This is the route I'll be cycling, with my cousin, next month. It's planned, mainly,to avoid the worst of the hills. Feel free to advise on anything worth stopping and viewing, for instance I want to see Trujillo and cycle through Montefrague national park, however, I also want to see Cace...

Re: Sell up in UK or rent out your house.

Keep the UK house. keep the UK house and see how things pan out. Don't know what your area is like but an average 3 bed property rents for £1700pm. around here so a nice little income. My mum would get that in leafy Barnet but rents out her 4 bed detached for £850, that is in a nice area, equidistan...

What a strange post and assumption. It makes me laugh, all this "faux" concern for the dead animal, often from folk who can't wait for their next burger. :?

Re: Is the "crisis" getting worse where you live?

Spain is still a recipient of EU funds, it's no longer the largest but it certainly still receives a lot of money. It's winding down but it doesn't become a net contributor until 2014. This was not the money that I was alluding to though, Spain can't put up future EU payments as collateral for any ...

Re: Is the "crisis" getting worse where you live?

The money is drying up and they don't seem to have a feasible Plan B, fasten your seatbelts, we're in for a bumpy ride. The money dried up many years ago, what is now drying up is credit, because that is no longer seen by the banks as an asset. I am cycling through from Bilbao to Malaga in 7 weeks ...

Re: Buying a bar in fuengirola???

I passed through last year in August and the town was surprisingly quiet. I run a small business so chinwagged with a lot of owners, they are struggling badly. Tbh all you need to do is to take a walk around for a day, what your eyes don't tell you, your ears will. Katy is right, stop thinking about...

Re: Is the "crisis" getting worse where you live?

I think Spain will be looking at a bailout soon :( That will only perpetuate the problem though, it's not "fixable". What sort of IOU can Spain give to be used as an asset against the bailout (loan)? And so it goes............... Beggars in Barcelona, regular Spanish folk in say Eixample and Gracia...

Hi Enrique,

Many thanks! I'll be writing a blog (or something) with plenty of pics, I'll give a link in May. I took your advice and emailed 3 bike shops, each of them offered to help.

Re: A favour required.

Enrique, thank you for your suggestion, I may contact the shop nearer the time. However, I am still keen for help because I don't have a fixed day of arrival in Malaga and if I know somebody has the boxes then I'll sleep easy. Getting into Malaga the day I fly out and arriving at the shop to "Mark w...

A favour required.

GerryH very kindly agreed to help me last year with storing some cycle bags, I was going to cycle Barcelona to Malaga. Unfortunately I had an accident and plans were put on hold from months whilst I recuperated. I've turned 50 whilst in re-hab and have decided to "go for it" whilst I still can. June...

Re: Euro to peseta exchange rate ??

I agree,a new currency might well not have any "2nd class" connotations that would be attached to the "new" Peseta. But with Spains debts in Euros, whatever the new currency is called and however it would be percieved, it'd still be worth diddly squat. It'd be a total disaster for everybody in Spain...

Re: Euro to peseta exchange rate ??

But Spains debts would still be in Euro's, it's assets valued in "new" Pesetas! I am with El CId and I too think it would be more than 20% lower, a lot lower in fact.

I don't expect it to happen.
