Re: Voluntary NI contributions (Class III)

It IS the best investment you have ever come across. When we came to Spain in 2004 aged 54 and 55, we each got a Pension Forecast from the UK.It said to get a full State Pension I needed another 2 years NI contributions and my husband another eight years. We decided to pay my two years first as my P...

Re: I do wish it was not so.........

Tell me about it. I got heartily sick and tired of poor service in shops, no-one knowing the price of anything in shops, being classed a a criminal if I took a (faulty) item back and told I must have broken it myself, you name it......however as I write this I remember the nice man who used to sharp...

I repent in sackcloth and ashes. Please do not banish me to eternal ban-dom for committing this heinous sin! I'll try not to do it again, promise!

Re: Dentists and dental insurance... argh!!!!!

Fair comment but I was merely saying that I thought Spanish prices were cheaper than the UK. Unfortunately most of the UK prices that people have quoted were on the NHS which makes them completely irrelevant. Thanks Katy for quoting a proper price. So, it was my fault but back to Spanish dentists n...

Re: Flying Cat to UK

My friend took a small dog (chihuahua) as hand luggage on a flight to Amsterdam from Malaga. The animal had to fit comfortably in a pet carrier of hand luggage size that could go under her seat. I don't know what airline it was, or whether it is allowed on UK flights, but worth asking about.

Re: Selling Houses privately...A warning

We knew what we wanted but were prepared to be flexible. We wanted a village house in a village with at least one bar (we didn't want to live 3k up a track). The house itself had to be livable, although we didn't mind doing some renovation work. We wanted windows in all the rooms (you don't always g...

Re: Cause for concern or just a rumour!

We never did rent our house, but we did several home exchanges (where you live in someone else's home for a holiday and they live in yours). No money, black, white or striped, exchanged hands. Would this come under the legislation? Can't do them now - no-one wants to come on holiday to the West Midl...

Re: Selling Property (I know it's not a good time but....)

We sold our house in summer 2011 (sale completed April 2012) and we did not use an agent. We drew up our own particulars (in English and Spanish) and placed them in places frequented by expats. We had three viewings, only one of them serious, but they bought the place after we agreed to a reduced as...

Re: Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire!

I wonder what I would find to do all day back in the UK. All my hobbies and favorite pursuits here in Spain are based either in the garden, on the beach, or in the hills, in other words, outside. With the weather as it is in the UK, I would be completely at a loose end, you can only visit a certain...

I renewed my passport in the UK when I was Spanish resident. As I was going to be there for a month or two I did it via the Post Office and payed the same rate as any other UK citizen. It came back ten days later.

Re: Are you thinking of selling up !

Am I being over-suspicious? I doubt it!! My faith in Hacienda to deal a fair hand is matched only by my mistrust of ANYTHING new which emanates from either them, Junta de Andalucia or a local Town Hall.......and the day when they actually teach ALL their officials to apply the 'law' fairly a...

I agree with the above poster, although I live in a Midlands city rather that a rural area. Have you looked at English countryside? Scottish and Welsh is pretty good too. Have you seen ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire (a World heritage site) - beautiful scenery and celebrating the birthplace of the In...

Re: Town hall has embargo against my bank account

Here's another recommended lawyer (based in Granada). We used him to sell our house, it was very complicated as all the papers were wrong, he got them all updated for us. Very complicated but he carried it out flawlessly. He also told us the lowest price we could accept for our house without this sc...

Re: Are you thinking of selling up !

I still can't get my head around the potentially huge bill some buyers of 'bargain properties' could land themselves with. There is a thread on here about just that, house is valued at such a price, sell at a huge loss, but the new buyer is then landed with a tax bill because the house has been und...

We do not regret our return to "home" one iota.
We miss our friends and the sun, but nothing else.
We are glad to be out of the eurozone, too!

Re: Are you thinking of selling up !

Having sold in Spain, (made a tiny profit :) ) and moved back to the UK the only things I miss from Spain are the blue skies and the thing I find difficult in the UK are the dark nights at this time of year in the UK, it is dark for so long! I liked living in our little Spanish village and remember ...
