I wish we could help but we leave for the UK in just under 3 weeks and I know PAWS is full to the gunnels. I understand how difficult it is and we didn't have nearly the stress levels you have. Last year we rescued a young dog that we then fostered for six months during which she went from too shy t...

Surely if a person is gravely ill then they should be in an observation ward at least or intensive care? There's a world of difference between providing extra social and personal care and alerting staff to medical emergencies. A friend of ours is in Huercal Overa hospital at the moment and was kept ...

from BBC web site. I am a grower and exporter of organic fresh vegetables from Spain into the rest of Europe. Guaranteed, our season ends in July, but I still have crops in the ground that need to be harvested and exported to my supermarket customers. I am currently looking at sea freight alternati...

Frog, it's certainly a big part of it and it's not difficult to tell which dogs have been British. Walk well on a lead, trained to sit, like treats (Spanish owned dogs don't even seem to know what they are). A high percentage of dogs coming in to PAWS in recent months have been from owners going bac...

Dido, find a herbalista and buy a natural vegetable dye. My hair was getting very, very dry from all the chemicals used by my Spanish hairdresser, they seem much harsher than UK ones, so I switched to a vegetable based colour and it's now in much better condition. The colour also seems to be more fa...

I think it's the same in any developed country. While Spain doesn't give direct welfare benefits (as far as I know) it almost certainly spends significant amounts of money on the problem in other ways so maybe the public isn't as aware of the costs. I'm not trying to justify it but the reason for th...

Certainly not settled in our area. The Priors were headline news in the local paper again this week when their ayuntamiento announced that they were not going to pay compensation as it was not their fault and the Priors should sue the Junta de Andalucia! This is a retired couple, one with a heart co...

Hi Bubba, I know you asked Jool but since I'm here ... As far as I know the only ill effects you'll suffer from alcohol are the usual ones if you drink too much of the stuff http://img.chefkoch.de/img/smileys/booze.gif My doctor certainly never told me of any contra-indications and depending on what...

Of course there's nothing wrong with sending money home, it's often the main reason for going to the UK to work, I was just anticipating one of the immigrant haters (rich considering they're immigrants here  ) moaning about how they send all their money home and don't spend it in Britain.

I had voipcheap and skype on my pc at the same time with no problem, though I rarely used skype. I now have 12voip (same company) which is even cheaper for mobiles, 10c a minute to UK mobiles and free sms. I know skype is free to other users but all of my calls are to landlines or mobiles and voip i...

You may also find that although many doctors can read English very well, they need to if they want to keep up with medical research, they may not be able to speak it so well. When I was doing my TEFL training in Madrid I came across several students who had very good levels of understanding when rea...

Even worse many will continue to live in Spain and continue to claim UK benefits! The worst type of all  At least an immigrant claiming benefits in the UK is spending their money in the UK. Yes, I know some send money 'home' but they tend to be the ones that are working as it's not really an ...

It's amazing what a little TLC can do. We had a galgo tied to our shelter gates a few weeks ago and she was in such poor condition that the manager was convinced she had leishmaniosis. An urgent blood test was taken and in the meantime she was given all the usual care plus bathed to treat her skin w...

Just try to remember that the media picks out the sensationalist stories. Yes, there are the takers but for every one of those there a plenty who are willing to work their way out of poverty or even just out of mediocrity. That doesn't make good headlines though  Look behind them, look at some...

I think it's been about 14 years for me and only ever tried the type prescribed by my doctor, which I assume was levothroid as when I first arrived in Spain I took the packet to the chemist and asked for the equivalent. I certainly don't feel any worse than when I was on UK prescribed thyroxine, but...

Seems very strange, unless they were looking for something else and found that? A simple blood test can diagnose an underactive thyroid, in fact I thought it was the only way to diagnose it for certain as it's a hormone level they test for, can't remember which one though :? Now is that my thyroid a...

I can't speak for the other shelters but PAWS has over double the number of dogs it's licenced for at the moment and a waiting list of dogs in temporary foster homes. SOS Almeria also closed their doors recently but took in a puppy on Monday when we referred someone on to them so maybe things have i...

I don't know what the situation is if your entitled to state health care here but if not you can buy thyroxine from the chemists and it is very cheap. This is what I do and have simply continued with the same dose as I was on in the UK. In my opinion it's dangerous to sell them over the counter as t...
