Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

Further to the above, as it were....

Little snippet from today's Telegraph.

"85,000 apply for 30 bank jobs in Italy"

Seems they are junior jobs, but youth unemployment close to 40%, and the high level of interest was a reflection of the state of the economy.

Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

Well, unless it happens, whole generations of youth in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, will be unemployed. Maybe that will be the normal. Sad perhaps, but true, unless the whole thing unravels, and countries are able to set their own exchange rates. Will be interesting to see how the political class...

Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

We keep hearing how things are improving in Europe. I did not see much signs in my most recent visit to rural Spain in May. Working age men hanging around street corners or selling lottery tickets. Not as many council workers being employed. Sad, but this is the new normal. Something has to give ev...

Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

I guess filling my boots is over egging it. We all need EUROS from time to time. Standing orders etc. I will simply use EUROS purchased at much better rates than now, until I can get some at better rates again. We keep hearing how things are improving in Europe. I did not see much signs in my most r...

Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

The EU is doomed an any case, with or without the UK.

I have a gut feeling, it won't take that long for the £ to recover.

I will not be buying at present levels.

However at 1.25 I would fill my boots.

Well,

Let's see what late September brings ( but in truth I don't need to buy for several years ).

But like to pick up holiday spending money now and again.

Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

Of course you can't. But unless Germany comes up with a magic money tree, the EU is still on borrowed time, and of course, BREXIT will create just as much problems in the EU as it will in the UK... I don't need to buy EUROS at the present time. I will bide my time in the full confidence that when I ...

Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

May drop a cent or two before the dust settles.

The EURO is in no great shape either.

In my humble opinion it is way overvalued against the £.

1.25 would be a fair exchange rate.

Re: Effect of the UK General Election on the exchange rate.

Yes, Of course there have been mutterings about pensioners having ( but not all of course ) it easy compared to the younger generation. But this was really May shooting herself in the foot. The worst of all possible outcomes. We live in interesting times ! The £ is going nowhere for now. anyroads

And getting back to the exchange rate...

I expect a small uplift when the Conservatives are returned with a working majority. Brexit will keep a lid on it for a while alas.

No matter what government is in power.

There is little they can do if some nutters decide ( perhaps being "inspired" by all the attention the others got from the BBC ), they are going to hire a van, get some knives and create havoc. Sad but true.

Took out this month a kilo of "bacon" from Lidl which cost all of £3.39.

We invited some friends in for dinner one night when we cooked the bacon. They are long term residents and said they are unable to buy anything of that quality at any price !

Re: From Mexican island to alpujarras, any advice appreciated

I was in a bar last week, catering more or less for Real Madrid fans, second last game of the season which they won to go 3 points clear ( they have won the title tonight ). The place was packed. A few minutes after the final whistle, it was almost empty. A lot of the "fans" were either not drinking...

They are the only two fish I ever bother with in Spain ( Marcadona are good for both ).

I am not gone on some of the uglier looking ones. My loss I suppose.
