Todd I agree about mixing with the locals to learn the lingo - particularly in the bar/restaurant! It's amazing how a glass or two of vino liberates the brain as well as the tongue :lol:

Another way of bending the rules slightly - if you know that another nearby town has shorter queues and you happen to know a kind estate agent (?!), is to get a contract for a rental property in the area with the shortest NIE queues and take that along to get your number - it worked for me! :lol:

At least you're all TRYING to speak Spanish! :lol: That's the most important thing. Unlike the French, who can be very snooty when you mangle their lingo, the Spanish will normally be happy to help.. My recommendation is to try and find some tame Spanish children to chat to. Their language is simple...

Why don't you head for the Alpujarras and buy some of their traditional handwoven rugs - GORGEOUS! There are crafty type shops in Orgiva and Capileira that I know of - probably others elsewhere. They look wonderful on terracotta tiles.

They have a tradition of using pebble mosaics in the doorways of the town houses in the Sierra de Aracena region to the North West of Seville. really beautiful to see and if you can get hold of a guidebook I think you'll find some illustrations of the designs :lol:
