Leaking pool filter - fix or replace?

There has long been a accumulation of water in our buried pump housing, but I had never been sure if the water was coming in from the ground or the mechanism itself. I've just kept on bailing it out before it got near the electrics. Recently I have noticed the problem getting worse and, for the firs...

Re: Nest thermostat

I'm not quite sure what they are actually for. All the blurb I've read seems to be about Californians who like to leave the aircon on for their cat while they are at work. Do they serve any great purpose while there are people at home?

There is a blog called f...translation that specialises in this kind of thing. My favourite example: vino en botella = he came in bottle.

Re: Prevision Medica forms

The dental cover is a waste of money. It just gives you "discounts" on dentists' regular prices. Ours took a look at the post-discount prices and said that she charges less than that for uninsured patients.

Best caves open to public?

I've been entrusted with organising a family visit to a cave. Can anyone recommend (or warn me against) any in Malaga? I'm thinking of Nerja, Rincon de la Victoria, la Pileta and Ardales. Have I missed some?

Re: How does Spain deal with UK (tax free) gambling profits?

The Spanish rules are a mess. I read of a woman who was facing a tax bill on her million euros of gambling earnings. Hacienda will not take into account the 999,000 euros of losses that she made in the same period.

Cycling the Senda Litoral in Malaga

I'm trying to find out how much of the Nerja-Puerto de la Duquesa coastal path has now been completed and is suitable for cycling. The official announcements are of the "a new 100m section between two urbanizaciones was inaugurated today" variety. These aren't much use when deciding whethe...

Re: Rental.Where to advertise?

Has anyone tried Airbnb? I was looking for a month long summer rental yesterday and they had a better selection than some of the traditional sites, although I suppose you don't really know who you are dealing with.

Re: Cost of Electricity for a Swimming Pool

This winter I have experimented with turning the filter off completely and just using a floating chlorine dispenser. The water has remained totally clear and the Endesa bill was quite a lot lower than last year's.

See above. It just gives you "discounts". Ask your dentist if there would be any saving.

Re: Dental insurance

We made the mistake of paying for Prevision Medica's dental policy for a year. It cost around 110 per person and gave the right to free checkups and "discounts" on other procedures. When we tried it out the dentist said she doesn't charge for checkups anyway and the discounted prices were ...

Just wondering if you saw yesterday's news that Orange prices (you know, the ones that are "para siempre") are going up another 3 euros/month tomorrow.

Re: Dns or vpn

My set up, in case it helps anyone: We have "indirect ADSL" with Orange (who get the line from Movistar). Download speed is usually 5.8m. The Orange router does not allow the DNS to be changed, but this is not a problem as we adjust individual items instead. The Kindle Fire (new 7 inch ver...

Re: Should I change private health insurer?

Just to follow up on this, I've moved our son to Sanitas. He has never had a day's illness in his life, so there is no issue with pre-existing conditions. His monthly bill falls from 57 to 23 euros and we get a free Samsung tablet thingy. The main point about this is that some insurers charge less f...

Re: Should I change private health insurer?

That's a good point. Their definition of pre-existing could be pretty broad. I suppose I could stay with PM and move the other family members to the cheaper plan.

Re: Should I change private health insurer?

PM is planning to charge us 57/month from January. If you ask for a quote they will offer new customers the same plan for 46/month. The Sanitas plan does include hospitalisation and is probably cheaper for three reasons: 1) it's a price for new customers, 2) there is a 4 euro copayment, 3) they are ...

Re: Should I change private health insurer?

We are with Prevision Medica and are considering changing to Sanitas. No particular problem with PM, I'm just thinking about the price. There are other insurers that cost even less than Sanitas, but I've never heard of them, so am wary.

Should I change private health insurer?

I've just used a price comparison website and I see that I could save around 17 euros/month, times 3 family members by switching to what is probably the best known insurer. They include the same clinics and doctors (and more) that we already use. I appreciate that they wouldn't cover existing condit...
