Re: Coronavirus

I returned from two months in England last Monday. During my time there I travelled by 10 taxis, 4 buses, 6 trains, 3 hire cars and 2 planes. I stayed in 2 hotels, at my parents' and with a friend in her house in Brighton. I ate out only 6 times; the rest of my meals were 'at home'. Everything was o...

Re: First actual problem re:Brexit

Apparently Nationwide do have a page on their site for people who live and/or work abroad and who want a Sterling account. There are restrictions such as no overdraft and there are Ts&Cs but it does seem to allow a UK bank account for people such as us. https://www.nationwide.co.uk/support/support-a...

Re: First actual problem re:Brexit

Wow! That is very interesting. So, there is no blanket approach to having, or not, a UK bank account if living in the EU. So, more uncertainty and dithering to come.

Re: First actual problem re:Brexit

Today I got an actual letter in the post from BarclayCard repeating the information they sent in their earlier e-mail. They also wrote, and I quote: "... the way the UK leaving the European Union (EU) could affect some of our customers with an address in the European Economic Area (EEA). I, too, hav...

Re: First actual problem re:Brexit

I could use a family member's address but is that not illegal? Should my card get stolen or misused I may not have a leg to stand on in claiming back my losses. How many people do use false addresses?

Re: First actual problem re:Brexit

Some good ideas, there, thanks. I know it sounds ridiculous but things have hummed along so nicely for years I am a bit out-of-touch with alternatives.

Re: First actual problem re:Brexit

The three pension are civil service ones. I pay tax on those in the UK and tax on the rest of my income here BUT since about two years ago I declare what I am paying in the UK to the Spanish tax people as that is now a requirement. Debit cards? Never ever though of that. I need an actual credit card...

First actual problem re:Brexit

I got an e-mail several days ago from BarclayCard. They have been my only credit card for the last 20 years. They knew I had moved to Spain 15 years ago and simply sent monthly statements to my address in Spain. The reason for a Sterling credit card is that I have three pensions paid into my British...

Re: Coronavirus

   A local cafe we use doesn't even have QR code. menus have gone and you are expected to ask what there is! That's fairly normal in most of the places in Extremadura that are not tourist areas. The waiter or waitress just rattles off 'primero plato' followed by 'segundo plato' and we...

Re: Coronavirus

Not really sure what this new system is all about. Before I came to the UK in July I shopped in three different Mercadona’s and each one had a different system. I think that was to do with the size of each store. Who knows?

Re: Coronavirus

After a disappointing time with a local optician - who was very nice but a bit basic - I went to Specsavers on a trip to the UK about six years ago. I explained I lived in Spain, etc, but they gave me the whole examination plus photos plus plus and I have been going to them every two years and it wo...

Re: Coronavirus

It’s a stupid, techno idea that is intended to show that the government is on the case and reassure the masses. Most of the high-risk groups don’t have smart phones or even know what an app is.

Re: Easyjet

I think by that time everyone will be in a mess again so whether a person is travelling from Spain to the UK or vice versa it will be subject to tit for tat restrictions. Only my opinion.
