The discs I'm trying to burn to are all DVD-R - from the same pack of 10 I bought y'day. I understand that these are simple once only burn discs, not rewrite ones (RW?). AFAIK I've already successfuly converted the avi file to a form that should be able to be burnt onto disc...but I'm willing to try...

If the wall in question runs parallel to the floor (or roof/ceiling beams if single storey) beams above (you may have to expose them from below or above to check) then it is most likely not load-bearing. Beams usually span the smallest dimension of the room btw... If in doubt...don't do it
