Re: 2018 road trip to the Casa. More ideas like last year please.

Apologies, DA, I didn't see this thread until too late to be of use for your current trip. I've done the Chunnel to Malaga return trip a few times, most recently coming down in June. I shall be returning in late Oct/early Nov on the Atlantic side this time (I came down the Med route) and any swaps o...

Re: Fuel prices

Crikey, apols if this is old hat to most contributors (I've not been back long) but the 30/08 - 05/09 edition of Euro Weekly News had a fairly low-key article that the Spanish govt were considering increasing the price of diesel by a whopping 28%, pushing even the cheapest pump price over €1.50 per ...

Re: can you tell me where to find a good offer to rent a car

Until very recently, I regularly hired cars when in Malaga; 3 times a year or more. Almost all of them have worsened over the years. It used to be just queues and expensive fuel but it's got more serious especially if, like me, you have £35/year excess insurance and wave away their overpriced, overs...

Re: Fuel prices

A couple of factors to bear in mind are how modern the diesel vehicle is and the sort of driving one does. The engine itself might happily live on cheap fuel for >200,000km but the ancillaries bolted on to meet more stringent regulations might not. Meeting Euro 6 standards (2015+) requires a heap of...

Re: Linea Directa

The 2nd LD caller I had listened to my circs - 12 yrs UK NCD, but I would not close the policy as I still drive in the UK - and offered a very competitive premium similar to my UK one. I did think it odd but "that's a good price, I'll take it" syndrome worked. I've since added (multicar) o...

Re: Organised car tours - Guardia Civil

One last bit of on-topic; La Vuelta A Espana is heading out of the Granada area now, Olive, but it might be an idea to check for similar road-closing events along your intended route if the drive's not taken place yet. And, seeing as off-topic is all the rage, my trans-Europe car has an 02 plate and...

Re: Organised car tours - Guardia Civil

Ok. It's petered out on this part of the Costa; the known chancers headed back within years of the 2008 plug getting pulled on ducking + diving. BTW, Olive - reading back on your OP, you're trying to keep the numbers down for obvious reasons and the last thing you want is randoms turning up. My apol...

Re: Checking for Traffic Offences

Only slightly related, but might be useful to someone... Returning from my ITV on 17/7, I realized a bit late that a temporary 80 limit was on the stretch. DGT posted the picture (90kmh) on 23/7 but I left Spain on 24/7 and didn't pick it up until 28/8. I went straight online and was quite surprised...

Re: ITV, Algarrobo

My ITV was due by Aug 14th but I was leaving in late July and not returning until 27/08. I started looking around Malaga province in late June/beginning of July and appointments were all well into August - so the backlog had started already. Antequera had a slot around 1pm on 17th July so I snatched...

Re: Organised car tours - Guardia Civil

Staying on topic, has the event happened by now, Olive and, if not, are there any chances of squeezing a car in? My wife and I have just returned and are staying until November. It sounds like a really nice way to see more of the area and meet people. Apols if I'm gatecrashing (unintended) but I wou...

Re: Aircon mystery

You people are so handy  . I bought a LHD vehicle on UK plates to drive down here; great car but the aircon... ATS supposedly checked for leaks, took £35 off me and it made no difference. No refund, just a pretend session with a laptop and "you need dealer reprogramming" cobblers....

Re: Linea Directa

I bought a car in Dec 17 and insured with Linea Directa. I did look at Spanish comparison sites and found some interesting offers, but LD 'phoned me. The 1st caller gave an uncompetitive price and was quite pushy, but a 2nd call came from a very pleasant person who listened to my circs and the price...

Re: Using UK driving licences in Spain

Back to the original point, Gerry's link has an update that the UK is setting in motion the Vienna Convention so an IDP is at least a possibility (given that loads of minutiae also hasn't got off the starting blocks). A new link inside that article leads to the 'gov website: https://www.gov.uk/gover...

Re: Linea directa insurance - beware

I am looking at same situation. How many days in a row will Aviva let you be out of the UK? Sorry to take so long, Paddy (back in UK, been busy). I guess you've found out by now but, for anyone looking in... A UK car insured in the UK with Aviva can be driven in EU countries (continuously or otherw...

Re: Smarty DNS

Some hiccups with Smarty here, too (having recently switched to them). Sorry, it's a bit 2nd hand because only my wife watches. The w/e of terrible weather caused problems that turned out to be the ISP. Wednesday was also poor, lots of turning circles and iplayer was by far the worst - unwatchable. ...

Re: ITV rules re tyres

Thanks Chris, I have to admit I don't expect warm weather alone to do it for me; too much of a goldfish bowl. The only problem is it's a Modus (like the Clio mk3 but worse). Youtube abounds with the ridiculous procedure required to change a bulb (quite an amusing documentary/newsfluff one with 'o' l...

Re: ITV rules re tyres

"Sin ampollas, deformaciones anormales, roturas u otros signos que evidencien el despegue de alguna capa en los flancos o de la banda de rodadura." Hmm, con "peligro de reventon" is muy grave (fair enough and not applicable on my little nick) but show signs of detachment is a bit...

Re: ITV rules re tyres

Thanks everyone. Knowing that testing equipment is used helps. I have the option of asking for a check during a service for peace of mind (the lenses are in fine fettle - must be a bad seal). Will definitely turn up in an unwashed (or hand-washed) car! If a bulb goes before Aug, the whole lot's comi...

Re: ITV rules re tyres

Apols for posting another Q, but I'd appreciate your experiences as the ITV (mid-Aug) will be my first in Spain (the car is 2005, though). A rear tyre was not great and I had both rears replaced, same make but different to the front (matching, hope that makes sense) make. Should be all good there bu...

Wow, :D . First time I think I've been of any use here. That could all change in a few months, of course, but I liked the way their site was set up and seriously considered them. I had a look after I'd posted my reply; did they have something suitable on there or did they source something more speci...
