Re: Linea directa insurance - beware

ps, the Aviva tip is handy, esp if you haven't ruled out returning for extended stays. I'm toying with having a "trans-Europe" car based in the UK for a while and Aviva came up as having the best policy for less-hassle EU coverage.

Re: Linea directa insurance - beware

To the OP, I don't want to post a "you had it bad, I had it good" but can I suggest you try ringing again and see if explaining your sitch to someone else gets you a bit further? Like any company, things can be different depending on who you get on the 'phone. Of course, my exp was the opp...

Re: New Car First Service

Might not even be an oil and filter job, especially as it's free (call me old fashioned, but I like to have the old bits drained off even though manufacturer tolerances are tighter now). I've seen 1st service sheets that amount to wiggle, wiggle, tick box and maybe change the pollen filter. Presumab...

Re: car sales

You might also have noticed a lot of Bill Brady classified ads in Sur in English, Euro Weekly News. Also has a website; tends towards the €9000+ market but does have lower priced cars. Marbella is a bit of a trek for you but he's been going for as long as I can remember and my neighbours below (I re...

Re: car sales

Axar-cars is right around that price point. I don't know how established you are and comfortable in Spanish, so it may be an advantage that they're native English speakers. For me, a plus was that the cars had service history (fairly uncommon here in that bracket) and there wasn't a loaded up price ...

Re: car sales

:D . A little more info would be helpful, 2nd hand, I assume - how far can you travel to view? What sort of price range etc. A seller moderately close to Frigiliana is Axar-cars (dotcom). I was considering one or two of theirs and somebody else on here had heard good word of them, but I ended up buy...

Re: Failing a driving licence medical

If you fail a check in Spain? I don't know this end of the rules but, back in the UK, if you have a foreign (eg, Spanish) DL and it has been suspended for some reason then DVSA won't return it until that period ends. If you're in the UK with a valid driving licence, there is an up to £1000 fine for ...

Re: Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

And, just a quick update, I had followed the steps, except rebooting the PC. Once done, Smarty works as DNS as well as VPN. Thanks again for the advice.

Re: Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

Yes Mark, the Smarty Valentine offer of $27 for the year (about 50p/week) is a definite worth-taking-up. I like the idea of using a competitor's free trial if the main one's down (don't know why that didn't occur to me) and, if a good deal comes up when it expires, taking it up as a back-up resource...

Re: Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

That's the price I saw, thanks Paul. If it's the standard (no special deal) price, that's quite good and I'll keep them in mind as a backup. The router put in by the installers is a TP Link which is as common as. Should be a straightforward job to finish off.

Re: Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

Mark, had a look at Smart DNS. Only sign of cost was "pricing" link down at the bottom.$40 for a year is what I saw. Not bad, but is there a link elsewhere for the £15 price? EDIT: Gerry, Wicksey - thanks. There's more to the DNS than I first thought, I should RTFM  . Should be fully...

Re: Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

Thanks everyone for the responses, glad to have them (esp considering I nearly strangled the thread at birth). So far, Smarty is working fine using the VPN side with no lagging and not disrupting my OS and hardware drivers. I realize I'm better off with DNS so I'll look further into the setup and tr...

Re: Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

Thanks for the rapid response, Sid. As Smarty have a Valentine's offer (just like their Xmas one, $27 a year instead of 80-odd) I've just done the 3-day free trial in the last few hrs. Surprisingly, in my case, the DNS option didn't fool iPlayer nor even ITV Hub. I double-checked and restarted but s...

Re: UK data sims , contracts and roaming

Thanks again for helping me out, elusive. I'm not clued up on Android (or iOS, but I haven't used any Apples since the Mac II days). Until a few months ago, my 'phone was a Nokia that did calls and texts (I still use it) and PCs are my thing for everything else. Mrs 1BL tends to jealously keep her S...

Re: Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

Sorry everyone, I'm terrible for TLDR. Instead of Buffered, which is bad, I'd be interested in people's experiences with VPN services that reliably allow me to use UKTV for the months when I'm in Spain. I'm trying Smarty on a free for 3 days but any long-term usage experience others have had would b...

Recommend me a replacement for Buffered

Or Bu^^ered, as I usually call it. Don't worry, I have read related threads here (very useful, too) but didn't want to hijack or derail them. My setup is an unsmart HDTV and, pretty much solely for TV, a Lenovo T420 (Win7). We were only here for hols, so I used to rent a mobile SIM for my router (no...

Re: UK data sims , contracts and roaming

I was a bit ranty and definitely should have italicized "might not deliver what you thought you were getting. I'm glad other people aren't having the slightest problem but I am. To re-iterate, data roaming works just fine in Spain for me (I've just been today and changed the tariff to 10Gb data...

Re: UK data sims , contracts and roaming

Don't know if my exp is any use to you, Olive, but I'll throw my tuppence in (short version in last paragraph if TLDR). Until recently, we used Tesco mobile exclusively for calls and, because we only stayed here for odd fortnights and the month of August, never had any issues as I would expect not t...

Re: Anyway of checking vehicle history?

Hi Olive. I've looked around and the owner of the vehicle on 01/01/18 is liable for the tax for this year, even though the bills are sent out usually at the end of April (you can talk to your bank about a DD, as well as going to the town hall). There is no redemption for part of a year, so it's an a...
