Bringing cash to Spain

Postby gronc » Tue Mar 06, 2007 8:42 pm

Is there a limit on bringing Sterling Cash into Spain by carrying personally on a flight. I´m not talking about a great deal, maybe a thousand or two pounds.

Cant remember where i read it buy if you are stopped by customs or a police officer carrying more than £1000 pounds you may be asked to prove why you have that much on your person.I know a £1000 pounds seems silly as people often carry allot more than that IE for deposits or just spending money but that's the laws of the UK for you. Will try and find the link and post it for you.

I'm not sure about pounds sterling, but I did enquire at the post office when I was exchanging for some euros...the limit was something like 3,500 euros worth of GBP..so just over 2 grand by my poor reckoning.

I think its 6000 euros, this is what we are allowed to take out to Gibraltar so it must be the same in.

It is definitely €6.000 per person but if you get caught with more by the Guardia Civil a 'donation' to their 'benevolent fund' will usually see you on your way unhindered.

i got stopped at luton with £3000 in cash by customs on a routine inspection and i had to prove why i was carrying cash and where i got it from. I was held up for half an hour for 3000 so i would be careful about carrying large amounts through airports.

Another little tip try not to bank more than say 5000 euro at a time as they can flag up on your account and you may be asked about the possibility of money laundering

I tried to pay 9000 euros into my account here and they told me that anything over 6000 paid in has to have a form filled in and sent to the Bank of Spain. They also said it is illegal to carry more than 6000 around. It makes me wonder how the people get rid of their black money

Katy - perhaps they don't tell the police they are carrying it.

Maybe there are exceptions to the amounts allowed in Marbella - didn't the erstwhile planning councillor claim that the 300,000 Euros cash found in his house was birthday presents to him? Dinner for a few friends in Puerto Banus could easily exceed the 5000 Euro limit (with tip) !

I think that the foil strip in banknotes will show up on airport scanners - so why not drive here? Minimal or no checks at all!
