E MAIL SCAMS

Postby alaninspain » Tue Sep 18, 2007 7:43 am

I have now received an e-mail from what appears to be a Nigerian Anti-Scam concern asking for information regarding possible scams, compensation, and requesting the offending e-mail addresses to be sent in bulk to them on a wordpad. Has anyone else had this e-mail and if so, do they think it is a) possible genuine and b) worth replying. :?

a.) no
b.) no

As a general guideline, if I receive an email[1] from someone I don't know
or a forum I'm not subscribed to and they ask for information I treat it
as a scam. They're after "live" email addresses to sell. It sounds like a
variation of the "send an email to unsubscribe ..." idea.

[1] or a phone call or letter for that matter

Alan did sign off with a smiley, so I think he knows the answer! :D
I use Mailwasher Pro, and unless I OK it, or have in the past, it goes right in the bin unread. The good thing about these programmes is that if you wish, you can see the contents of the mail without downloading it. So if not 100% sure, you can have a peep!
Received a letter yesterday telling me I had won a certain prize, that too went straight in the bin.

I apparently win at least 3 lotteries a day,I am soooooooo lucky, anyway over the last 3-4 months the scams have got a lot worse in volume,I use choicemail so unless I look at the unknown senders they dont bother me.

My internet connection was down for a week. Had it back a week now and checked old email address for the first time. It has 2861 new emails, first 50 all spam, not checking the rest

My mail is filtered by my ISP into a Bulk mail Folder which I can check if I want.

What puzzles me though is that although I have not changed any settings, a lot more is getting straight through to me.

It all appears to be scams that are getting through rather than pills and devices to make parts of my anatomy larger.

Any idea why more should be getting through?

Remember that everything that Fred Astaire did, Ginger Rogers did too; except she did it backwards and wearing high heels!

Nope, but mine is exactly the same, all sorts of dross is coming through. I have a couple of accounts, and the one with gmail does seem to stop a lot of the spam, but inevitably some gets through. I go in there from time to time and clear it all out, and there are literally hundreds there! It takes time with Mailwasher, but once you have set it up for your friends and blacklist, it works well. You can also add whole domains to the blacklist, so you never get troubled with them again. Plus keyword all the rude bits, plus things like viagra etc and it makes it bearable. I often wonder who ever replies to these spam messages, someone must, or they wouldn't be sending them. :(

Scams.

Postby Geoff. » Wed Sep 19, 2007 7:58 pm

For some unknown reason in this last month a considerable number of people have received hundreds of E.Mail scams. They come in all kinds of disguises from begging nuns, to requests from banks for personal details. They also, pretend to be genuine people in distress. The last thing anyone should do is to reply. In addition to these if you receive any type of correspondence informing you that you have inherited or won something ignore it. Many telephone numbers accompanying them are charged at premium rates and I mean premium. The lot of them rely on ignorance and greed.

I and many of my friends and family are also getting an influx. I always scoffed at the ' penny pinchers ' saying such as 'well you pay for what you get, Aol are cool and I don't get those problems.' For all the dosh I pay, I am now also getting tons of the trash mail. I would love to know why, me being a simple IT user knows it is down to better hacking or such like, but all my report spam seems to go into the either.

Sorry, got to go, I am emailing the CEO of AOL who is busy at the mo on his prvate jet to his private island in the bahamas to check his spam filter is activated :)

My dear friend Mikel Obbinnada has just given me some very good news and Sussanne Abrahams has invited me to start a new life with large beautiful firm breasts. If only I was 20 years younger and could remember what they are?

Hope not. After spending all day racking my brain I have remembered what they are, is it possible to type with a lisp?

I have several email addresses and sometimes the same scam arrives in all of them at the same time.....how do they do that?

My Yahoo email account has gone from virtually no spam to maybe 15 per day over the last few weeks. No idea why really.

We never received any spam until about two months ago. Now we get at least 10 a day, regardless of whether or not I put them on my blocked list. When we went away for 3 days recently we had almost 40 in. Other people I know are having the same problem.

Spam

Postby andalucia » Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:46 am

It's a continuous battle between server/email companies and spammers.

Hotmail/Yahoo etc come up with new ways of filtering spam, which works for a time, until the spammers figure out how to get round it. Then you get a sudden influx of spam apparently for no reason.

And on it goes...

Apparently I should be a trillionaire by now if I claimed all my winnings, and took up all the offers to transfer funds out of Africa etc.

Now I have numerous bank accounts with different banks I wasn't aware of asking me to send them my details.

Didn't realise I was so popular that people have to keep sending me e-mails giving me stuff.

Only person I enjoy sending me lots and lots of e-mails is from Fearful Fred.
