Civil Partnerships in Spain
Civil Partnerships in Spain
If you know any gay couples who have had a civil ceremony in the UK and now live here then they should know this.
A spanish gay couple who marry in Spain then move to the UK are recognised in the UK as being married giving them all the same rights as the British,
A gay British couple who have their ceremony in the UK then move to Spain are not recognised as being civil partners here.
This means and I am speaking from experience I have no rights here in Spain to bury my civil partner if anything should happen even if a will is made.
His family have more rights here than me.
The matter is currently being discussed at the British Embassy and I am hoping all members here will support people like myself and my partner.
Please forward the following to this address please pm me to let me know you have done so.

Why don't you just get your partnership recognised under Spanish law - it's an easy process.
Incidentally the Spanish allow civil partnerships between heterosexual couples - the UK does not. Presumably in this case a Spanish heterosexual civil partnership would not be recognised in the UK.
Perhaps, for the sake of equality, you should take that up with the British Embassy as well.

when a straight couple marry in a registrars office in the UK it is classed as a civil wedding the same as a civil partnership in the UK we have the same rights as any married couple. What we are fighting for which has been dealt with at the embassy is a reciprical agreement between the two countries not just one sided...

Bongtrees, Aren't you missing the point, there should be no need to 'make suitable arrangements'. Surely you can appreciate, amongst other things, gay couples have been fighting for equal rights and death benefits / rights is one of them.
El Cid, 'why don't you just get it recognised under spanish law' - Why should he need to when we are all in this lovely melting pot of the EU? Regarding the take up the case of civil partnership for hetrosexuals; Have you forgotten that hetrosexuals have always been able to choose to get married be it in church or registary. Gay couples have never had the choice.
Was the warped humour from rotten Johnny funny, yes it was. I am sure Mijas golf would have accepted it if there had been some positive feedback first.
Mijas - This was a new bit of info for me, I wish you luck.

My comments of yesterday as you can see have been wiped, I did, unreservedly apologise, the joke was meant to be a pun on both Campo Kenny's battle against nicotine and the old fashioned bigoted expression referring to homosexuals, even though it was wiped I'd still like to make it clear that although I intended a little mischief no malice was intended.
To the original poster, when you are "different" however you interpret that word, be it Racially, sexually, religiously, or whatever, mainstream society is often afraid of you, usually because they don't understand you, in your situation you just need time it won't happen overnight, women waited for the vote, forty years ago homosexual men could still be jailed, look how far you've come in just one generation, everything comes but it takes time.
to be honest with you issues of sexual orientation are not at the top of my list, the situation in the middle east is of far more importatnce to me at the moment, if madmen like Bush and those who support him are not brought to heel there won't be anything for us, good luck in your crusade.

this topic is not about the middle east its about expats having the same rights as the spanish do in the uk.
We are supposed to be in the EU.
The sad thing is there are still many homophobic people out there.
I never chose to be gay......
News stats state one if five people are gay this means most families in the world will have one member of the family who are gay.
Im not saying people have to beleive in this we all have our own opinions.
As I said before I pay my taxes here in Spain and have a high salary so probably pay more taxes than most spanish but I wish to be treated the same as them.
The Home secretary for the UK and Spain met on 16th August to discuss our case.
But the more people email the embassy about this matter the quicker it will be dealt with.

Ahh, the homophobic word once more...........this is why a civil conversation is hard to have on this toic. If you are gay you can say what you like. If you are straight you have to choose your words either with with care or lie.
If people are uncomfortable with, or do not like this particular lifestyle there is no harm in that, and being able to say that should not attract the pathetic title of homophobic...........also there are far more important issues in which ex. pats are penalised than this, why would any ordinary person want to join this particular minority crusade, I don't get it sorry

I think you have to recognise that despite both the Uk and Spain being in the EU, there are many differences still in the laws of the 2 countries. A fact that the UK is currently defending in respect of opt outs of the proposed new treaty.
Just look at the differences in the benefits system and dealing with homelessness.
In my view Spain has only gone as far as it has in repect of civil partnerships because there is a socialist government in power. It will be interesting to see what happens should the government change next year.
I wish you success in your campaign. There are a lot of issues to campaign on in Spain, and we all have to decide for ourselves where to put our time and efforts. For me, in the totality if injustices in the world, gay rights does not come anywhere near the top.

Remember that everything that Fred Astaire did, Ginger Rogers did too; except she did it backwards and wearing high heels!
