Don't forget it's a Spanish Bank Holiday on Monday.
We are celebrating the Guardia Civil.

Why Guardia Civil?

The Virgen of Pilar is celebrated on the 12 October. She is the patron saint of the guardia civiles. It is normal for them to celebrate this day with a meal together.

I've just asked my wife what the holiday is on Monday , and she says it's Hispanic day which celebrates the discovery of America and even in New york there'll be a parade and other American countries will also be on holiday
I meanwhile will be crossing the border into France to have lunch and do a bit of shopping( not my choice I'd prefer to stay at home and relax but the OH has made her decision) :(

So does that mean they'll all be off, taking it easy, kicking back and relaxing and not on patrol - not that I'm thinking of planning anything, you understand?

He was actually born in Genoa, an independent state at the time of his birth.
y Spanish teacher was a bit taken aback when it was pointed out that he wasn't Spanish, but replied that as Queen Isabella paid for his trips, Spain should get the credit - a bit like African footie players being paid by UK or Spanish teams, so the team gets the glory!
He could not see that all the people living in America at the time knew it was there, so it was not a discovery to them.....

That's correct. The so called native Americans don't recognise this day as they had discovered America about 11,000 years before. What the Spain, The USA, a few latin Amercan and Caribbean countries celebrate is the discovery of The Americas by Columbus

Yes he was from Genoa and also was likely to have been Jewish. He married a Portugese lady and lived in Portugal! :D

Frog, are you still living in the 19th Century?
Not many Lumberjacks around these days, at least in Eastern Canada. Probably some out in British Columbia, in the Redwood forests, but that is several thousand km away.
