Spanish civil war tv prog

Postby pmb » Mon Nov 09, 2009 2:19 pm

Tonight on BBC4 9pm GMT there is a prog about the title. Specifically mentions the Malaga area in my paper listings. May be of interest to some of you.

Michael Portillo is presenting the programme I believe. He is always watchable.

It covers the mass exhumations of war graves.

This was an superb programme, well researched and made extremely watchable by Michael Portillo's excellent presentation. However, my own thoughts on the subject are probably best kept to myself.

If you missed it there is a repeat at 2.25am in the early hours of tomorrow morning on BBC4.

Yes it was interesting. I do find that British University professors have an extremely one-sided view though.
My own Grandfather was sent to the UK from Spain some time before the Civil war started as they were finding it increasingly impossible to run a factory with the chaos caused by the democratic Government. His family were apolitical. He opened up in the UK in partnership with a member of my UK family.

Just watched the programme on the BBC iPlayer.

Very moving and very, very sad.

I did watch a film when we were over, can't quite remember when it was on but it was called.
Death in the Afternoon. All about the Civil War and the execution of Lorca who was played by Andy Garcia.
I'm always disappointed when a liar's pants don't actually catch on fire.

This is a book by Ernest Hemmingway. I haven't seen the film, though.

Edit button is still there for me!

Got the views from a Spanish lady and she said that its a well known fact that Lorca was killed because he was openly gay and had nothing to do with his political beliefs.

I'd got mixed up with the Hemmingway book.

Here is a synopsis of the film Death in Granada

Synopsis
Drawing its basic story from author Ian Gibson's investigation into the real-life murder of Andalusian poet Federico Garcia Lorca at the dawn of the Spanish Civil War, this English-language thriller begins in 1935 as exiled Spanish journalist Ricardo and his family resettle in Puerto Rico. For most of his life Ricardo has been obsessed with the poet. In 1954, Ricardo returns to Spain to look closely into the circumstances of Garcia Lorca's death. His father advises Ricardo not to go, but the writer, who wants to do a book about the poet, disregards him. Ricardo is also driven by his desire to ease his guilt about a close friend who was shot by the Nationalists. While doing battle with tight-lipped government officials, Ricardo is followed by Centeno, a member of Franco's security team. He is also followed by an amiable taxi driver who has an uncanny knack for showing up when Ricardo needs him most. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Never mind the edit button, I should have used the spellchecker
