Re: Crisis Spotlight - where next?
Katy,
I know that papers such as The Telegrath are middle England and have an anti EU slant.Sometimes it's just a matter of differing opinions. Having said that, I'll try to read it a bit later but even before reading it, I know I'm almost sure I'm not going to agree with the article.
As soon as I've read it, I'll tell you if I do or don't agree with it

... but Mark, if you are already 'almost sure' before reading the article, as to whether you will agree with it, or not, doesn't that make you as guilty as The Telegraph of having a 'slant'? It might be opposite, but it's still not an open mind, is it? However, Mark Twain did once say, "If you keep an open mind people will throw a lot of rubbish into it."

All papers have a political slant, if they didn't they would be so boring they wouldn't make money. If you don't want any analysis or opinion the just read the raw news feeds from Reuters, A.P., AFP etc.
The suggested article is by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, who is a well respected journalist although I don't always agree with his views.
I think it is no secret that my English paper of choice is The Guardian, it normally has a slightly Liberal bias, but I like to also compare the views of the Torygraph when I have time, hey I even dip into the Mail when I am really bored but only to laugh at the reader's comments and mark them down.
When I am trying to make investment decisions however I prefer to stick with the relativley non-opinionated Reuters, Bloomberg or Financial Times.

I didn't say the Telegrath was guilty of anything, just that it is likely that their slant won't fit in with my views.Lavanda wrote:... but Mark, if you are already 'almost sure' before reading the article, as to whether you will agree with it, or not, doesn't that make you as guilty as The Telegraph of having a 'slant'? Is this because the D.T. is a right of centre party, whereas you are more aligned with the Socialist Workers Party?markwilding wrote:I didn't say the Telegrath was guilty of anything, just that it is likely that their slant won't fit in with my views.

So not being right of centre makes me more aligned with the Socialist Workers Party?

So you're saying that you can't be a socialist AND a worker? How weird ... how Tory ... how very you.peteroldracer wrote:Almost the perfect example of an oxymoron - far too concerned about their rights and those of every other Tom, Marmaduke and Harriet to actually get down to some real productive work...White Horse wrote: Socialist Workers

I didn't state that, I asked a question, which you have answered with another question.markwilding wrote:So not being right of centre makes me more aligned with the Socialist Workers Party?White Horse wrote:Is this because the D.T. is a right of centre party, whereas you are more aligned with the Socialist Workers Party?

As was your original question because my political persuasion has nothing to do with the thread and didn't deserve an answer.White Horse wrote:I didn't state that, I asked a question, which you have answered with another question.markwilding wrote:So not being right of centre makes me more aligned with the Socialist Workers Party?White Horse wrote:Is this because the D.T. is a right of centre party, whereas you are more aligned with the Socialist Workers Party?

Big question is does Rajoy have the cojones, last thing we want is an imposed Merkosy puppet........I don´t envy anyone who takes over now and Zappy has been VERY quiet of late, even ruby has been boring full of the usual rhetoric but only promises he can never hope to keep.......banks have stopped releasing property on to the market and started adding charges to current bank accounts so check your statements.......and wait for the rush of property released......

Spanish banks, under pressure to cut property-backed debt, hold about 30 billion euros ($41 billion) of real estate that’s “unsellable,” according to a risk adviser to Banco Santander SA (SAN) and five other lenders.

Re: Crisis Spotlight - where next?
If some Spanish banks wrote down the values of the properties they have on their books they would need re-financing. That is why they are not selling them cheap.
Re: Crisis Spotlight - where next?
Frank's Bloomberg report makes pretty sobering reading.
I don't know what the answer is, I'm sure Rajoy will be unable to balance the books, and if he tries austerity measures, the hoi polloi will be out there on the streets burning cars and breaking windows if they are not careful. The anarchists don't take kindly to having their cash handouts cut, especially by a right of centre government.
Watch this space.

As White Horse says the report is pretty damning, pretty grim. And agreeing with what you said, katy wrote:If some Spanish banks wrote down the values of the properties they have on their books they would need re-financing. That is why they are not selling them cheap.
And even bleaker they predict only the big banks will survive, and if they are right, even worse for people trying to sell properties. There is an “enormous” gap between prices offered by banks and what investors are willing to pay, preventing sales of large property portfolios, MaC Group’s Cantos said.
1 Million Homes
“Spain has 1 million new homes that won’t be completely absorbed by the market until the middle of 2017,” Fernando Acuna Ruiz, managing partner of Taurus Iberica, said in an interview in Madrid. “Prices will fall a further 15 to 20 percent in the next two to three years.”

Re: Crisis Spotlight - where next?
Yes it is all very serious, banks will stop offering mortgages on property that is not their own and thus will manipulate the market in that way also....and statistics producing such drastic falls in prices/values don´t help at all, at this rate my house will be worth less than the mortgage....and it was not a high LTV originally... I know of people refused subrogations on properties they want to purchase..there are no daciones en pagos being accepted..........on the other hand maybe the lack of really cheap deals will mean buyers have to be more realistic on prices as they were expecting some incredible price drops....interesting but a little worrying also especially when people see things getting worse post election - I just hope it does not put people off ousting the PSOE in Sevilla come March......
