Lavanda, Thanks for the little cabbage story, and that's just the type of story I want to hear, I will name a cat 'Lavanda', after you, in the book about the Spanish Civil War, that I've been writing and researching forever.
I've got all the main characters and story line sorted, but need a bit of interesting 'filler' now..

And some good war story type books recommended by everyone else,Thanks.

Regards,
Gordon.

I was always an avid reader, 6 or 7 books a week until about 4 years ago. Now I can't even be bothered to pick one up & I've no idea why ?
I had to tell my daughters to stop buying me books for birthdays, christmas, as I have a pile of new unread ones that I gaze at in the bedroom!

Try reading something completely different. I had a phase of wandering around Waterstones wanting a book, any book, something to read, something to zing my brain, and for weeks I walked out from the shop with nothing. I was desolate. One day, in desperation I asked an assistant to pick me something. They chose Carlos Fuente's 'The Eagle's Throne'. I never would have chosen it but it was electric and hilarious and started me off on a whole new reading road. Good luck. A life without reading is no life at all ...

See many here seem to be writing their own book. Gordon I think you should leave the Civil war one as it's been done to death. Would be really great to write one about your experience with the Lakonia sinking. Even a short article would generate some money. I have sold lots over the years to magazines.

Isn't that the one where the wife dies but the children survive?

CM I was going to ask Sid to delete your post which gave away the ending but have saved him the bother and took off the book. Your puerile post has deprived some of reading a good book

It could only happen on A.Com where a book recommendation has a troll come on and post the ending

Is this thread solely about books to do with Spain or can I throw in a general question?
If so can I ask if anyone can recommend authors of war fiction,English detective/ English crime fiction?
Light reading required,eg,I've read all the Chris Ryan/ Andy McNab books and have run out of ideas.
nothing too intellectual...just stuff to read and not have to think about too much while on holiday.
Also,(and this will be basic stuff for some of you so please bear with me) ,I would like an e reader but as I don't have one of these Kindle type things or a tablet I am thinking of buying a google nexus 7 to do both jobs.
Is this a wise thing to do?
Is it easy to download books for free, our local library has the facility?
Would I have to be connected to the internet to read books?
I know these are probably daft ?s for most of you but I am a duffer on these things.
Apologies to Sid if the last bit is in the wrong section.
Many thanks.

Colin Forbes (with his ulta-English hero, Tweed) writes good espionage stuff that is light reading. Jack Higgens has an Irish 'hero' called Sean Dillon and his books are good yarns. I like Clive Cussler as well but he's American. For English war stories you can't beat HE Bates "Fair Stood the Wind for France', 'A Moment in Time' etc. Something a bit unusual is Kate Mosse's trilogy centred on Carcassonne. The last book in the series (it could stand alone) is Citadel which is about France in WWII. I know it's not British but I though it was a powerful story.

Journey into the Whirlwind by Eugenia Semyonovna Ginzburg a two-part highly detailed first-hand account of her life and imprisonment in the Soviet Union during the rule of Joseph Stalin in the 1930s. It might not be everyones "cup of tea" but once you start reading it, it is hard to put down.

I'm a great fan of detective novels and there are some great British writers. Ruth Rendell, PD James, Elizabeth George, Peter Robinson, and Ian Rankin to name but a few. If you widen it to American writers I really like Jonathan Kellerman and Jeffrey Deaver as well.

English detective/ English crime fiction
I recommend Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler books, Michael Robotham's Joe O'Loughlin books & Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks.

This is probably the rarest book I've ever bought. I've had a few good offers on it
