"The Yard"
By Alex Grecian.
The author is an American writing a Victorian Detective novel.
It's as big as a house brick.
A really enjoyable read.
It's got boys up chimneys, mad killers with scissors,Jack the Ripper, lesbian prostitutes with scars toting pistols, hansom cab drivers kidnapping people.

My kinda book!

Just read 600 hours of Edward and am now reading Edward Adrift - author Craig Lancaster. Absolutely loving them, must see if there are any more in the series.

I've just started reading a book given to me by some Spanish friends, in English it's 'A People's History of the United States', by Howard Zinn, already finding it really interesting...

My main reading over many years has been predominantly contemporary and historic Arab and Islamic. Exhausted [both in material and mentally ] I moved almost exclusively to Andalusia/Moorish history. The reading included some really well researched historical novels. All was to do with the area [geographical] and on-going knowledge needed for work. :shh:

Recently I felt the need for a complete break and surprised myself by downloading “The Forever War” by Joe Haldeman. I say surprised myself because I have never considered Sci-Fi material before…….aliens, space travel, incomprehensible ideas etc…….. , but it's nothing like that and I was impressed with the amazing reviews..

By the by, great offers at the bookshop at the Miramar Shopping Centre, 50% off EVERYTHING. I just replaced all six of Jeanm Auel’s “Earth Children” series ……. Now there's a great read.

Anyway, back to the Kindle..........

Talking of book series, my favourite series by far (I've read them all 2 or 3 times) is Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. I believe it is about to be made into a film (or films, I should think! Each book is about 800 pages long!) Characters are great, stories are amazing - time travel is involved but she makes it believable. Have a look at some of the reviews, see if you think they'd be your cup of tea :)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
My spelling is Wobbly. It's good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.

I've just finished 'Yo, Julia' by Santiago Posteguillo and I am now reading the sequel, 'Y Julia Retó a los Dioses'. It's the story of Juila Domna who was the wife of Septimio Severo, a Roman soldier, military strategist, governor and eventual Emperor of Rome. Together they founded the Servero dynasty. Amazing story and very well written. The first book is over 600 pages long and the second over 700 pages. The author, himself, is a interesting person; a historian but one who has worked also in America and England.

In English, a friend gave me 'Warlight' by Michael Ondaatje for last New Year. Brilliant book and I have read it four times now just for the sheer pleasure of enjoying erudite and good writing.

I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks whilst driving. ALL of Harry potter. Most of Sherlock Holmes. Started the Witcher series. Steig larrson trilogy. Lots of Jack reacher series. Currently working my way through count of Monte Cristo. 35 hours long. There's more but can't think of them at the moment.

The best book I've read in recent years is a Stephen King book the title is 11.22.63.

It's not a thriller or a horror book , the best way to describe it would be to say t's a kind of back to the future book for adults who have a good imagination.

It was published in 2011 but I only discovered it a couple of years ago, It's so good I won't even lend it out, i won't give the plot away but it's an imaginative look at the Kennedy assassination, an absolutely great read and I thoroughly recommend it !

"Homeland", by Fernando Aramburu. Set in the Basque country. A great read about a beautiful part of Spain.
If you want something more topical, "A Journal of the Plague Year", by Daniel Defoe: a fictional account of one man's experiences of the year 1665, when the bubonic plague struck London.

I have just read two excellent factual books by David Sedgwick about the BBC. Very revealing but no surprise.
