a good thing ... or not

Postby Lavanda » Sat Feb 09, 2013 8:28 am

EuroVegas has been talked about for years and it looks as though it will start this year ... to be finished in about 18 years. I guess it will bring a lot of jobs quite quickly in construction and lots more jobs in the future.

As a person who has been to Las Vegas I think it will be great for shows, concerts, restaurants, shopping etc. I did use 50USD on one-armed bandits in various casinos but didn't do anything else as I don't understand anything else. I think the whole thing can be great fun - for a holiday - but I'm not sure I'd want to live too near the resort - but then I'm not looking for work.

I've never been to Las Vegas (nor Sun City), they just wouldn't appeal to me, though I know lots of people who have who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I'd be unlikely to go to EuroVegas either (if I'm still around in 18 years' time!).

But I think in these times inward investment which will create jobs cannot be anything but welcomed. The tried and tested way of countries emerging from recession is investing in capital projects - but Spain has done so much of that over recent years that it probably has too MUCH infrastructure already, what with the unused airports and scarcely used roads in some areas, not too mention all the museums, hospitals, prisons etc built but unable to be opened as there is no money to run them. It is encouraging that there are signs that Spain is beginning to attract new investment in projects, just this week there was a report in Diario Sur that the Ayuntamiento here in Velez-Malaga has agreed to make land available in response to requests to build a new private hospital and testing centre for clinical analysis, and a new British college. I hope they both come to fruition, people desperately need the work.

It has to be better than nothing although many spaniards are against it. I wonder where all the investment will come from  Eurovegas company say they will pay for 35%, that's a lot more billions they need to raise. Said in Sur yesterday that they are hoping spanish banks will invest :lolno:

I hated Vegas couldn't wait to get out. Does seem to be popular :silent:

Outwardly it will be trumpeted a success story.

massive investment, tourism, jobs.

However I suspect that it will create a lot of misery. Addicted gamblers, family savings lost. Then there will be the seedy side of things with sex trafficing plus black money with no tax paid.

My brother and his wife spent a week in Las Vegas and didn't spend a dime on gambling - mind his wife is Scottish! :lolno:

What worries me about Euro Vegas is gambling culture is different in the USA from Europe.
In most states in the USA gambling in illegal but in Spain you don't need to go very far to find slot machines and there are already casinos scattered around the country.

I think I am living dangerously putting the odd 2€ on the euromillions, so no chance I will be going off to the casino  Someone we know went to Vegas, spent 1,000 pounds on gambling and never saw daylight! He went knowing he would spend the cash, it wasn´t a ´oh a bit more, I might win´

Not my cup of tea, but gambling is a big winner, and it will provide much needed work, but as Katy said where is the money going to come from, also Mark, its not really aiming at Spanish people or thats how I heard it, the idea is that people will flock from all over europe and other places, I am quite surprised it got passed in the end with all the shouting that has gone on about it, but I hope it comes out on the bright side so to speak :)

Reminds me of the joke about the three Jewish bookmakers.....

Three Jewish bookmakers are coming home from a race meeting and one gets killed crossing the road.
One of the other two decided he would go and tell the dead mans wife.

He knocked at the door and a woman answered it. He said "the widow Cohen " ?. She said, no I am Mrs Cohen, I am not a widow. He said "you wanna bet ? "

With regard to the Black Money it will always be a percentage of any moneys generated , a smaller slice of something has to be better than 100% of nothing and while its being built then once in operation there will be jobs created and money circulated , even Black moneys paid is used to buy from other businesses . Local businesses wont be concerned if the money spent with them has been declared or not , i suspect the local council wont refuse it either where ever it came from . In a way Black money could be seen as being better for the LOCAL economy that it would be had tax etc been deducted 1st , there will be more of it left in the region rather than being left with a smaller slice after being filtered through central government .

Yes, something is better than nothing, but it really depends how desperate you are, what you are prepared to sacrifice to get it. Barcelona didn't get it because it wouldn't stump up 35% of the total coast, nor were they prepared to comply with the law changes required. So step up Madrid, anything you want, you can have. And Adelson has made it clear, he will be bringing in quite a few of his own people. Protestors have claimed Spain is creating a special low-tax "mini-state" for Adelson
Esperanza Aguirre, from the liberal wing of the centre-right People's party (PP), has promised to introduce whatever law changes are needed.
Madrid's regional president Ignacio Gonzalez also virtually promised that Spain's central government would deliver the tax changes, infrastructure and even exemptions to the no-smoking laws that Adelson sought. "On the tax side everything is resolved, though some changes from central government are awaited," he said.
Regards, Frank

You will see a number, 7 at the moment and probably rising, of strange replies to old posts.
