Over the past couple of years I have been emailing and tweeting the BBC about the fact that non-working residents in Spain have to show a sustainable income of at least €5.000 per year and have have private health insurance if they are not pensioners and asking why similar requirements are not imposed on foreigners wishing to live in the UK.
It looks as though the BBC Radio 4 'The World Tonight' programme is going to take up this matter and is asking for anyone who has been affected to send an email to:
[email protected]
I'm not sure if anyone on ADC has been affected directly but please pass on the message if you know anyone who has.

Re: BBC Radio Programme - Residency Requirements
The simple answer is because the EU Directive on residency allows members states the ability to apply these restrictions but it is optional.Beachcomber wrote:Over the past couple of years I have been emailing and tweeting the BBC about the fact that non-working residents in Spain have to show a sustainable income of at least €5.000 per year and have have private health insurance if they are not pensioners and asking why similar requirements are not imposed on foreigners wishing to live in the UK.
Spain chose to do this, the UK did not.
It's a question for Mr Cameron to answer.

Out of interest, for those of us who qualified for medical services via the new rules of fiscal residency rather than being a pensioner last year, do you still have to have private cover? I have Sanitas, but is it necessary? Could the rules change?

I know it is. I have tried to ask him that question but get no reply so I am hoping that the BBC will ask him although I'm not holding my breath.El Cid wrote:...It's a question for Mr Cameron to answer.

Re: BBC Radio Programme - Residency Requirements
I guess that is why everyone is jumping up and down about the UK being a soft touch.
Strange, I have an email from DC most weeks ( telling me how well they are doing, but could I see my way to send a bit more money ! )
