BBC2 today
Re: BBC2 today
Same in most Countries for small trades. I pay the Gardener in UK cash, chimney sweep! Plumber etc. I did have an electrician who insisted on being paid by cheque, not sure why. A deterrent to declare in Spain is no threshold for IVA. Even when we lived in Geneva they wanted cash.

My Butler or one of my private secretaries deal with all the payments and running costs of my extensive property portfolio but I recall once seeing a petty cash tin in my Belgravia residence, however I'm pretty sure the team of "Chimney Sweeps" just get a hot meal once finished and a condescending pat on the head. I do however always give my Gulfstream G150 Pilot and Crew a little something at Xmas after being delivered unflustered to Sandy Lane

Just to add I pay my due taxes. I also think expats in bars often think it clever to say they don't pay when actually what they mean is that they owe nothing due to for example government UK pensions.
In Andalucia I've used man with a van from Asturias, electrician and log burner specialist. In each case the builder who prepared and finished was cash. Specialists and materials were invoiced and IVA.
The guy/labourer who helped the log burner installation wanted the old kitchen (I'd have scrapped it, it was in terrible condition) for his house. He offered to take it out and remove all our rubbish and unwanted stuff in return. The installer who was for those days paying him was happy for us to use him offering that the guy needed all the help he could get.
It took two and a half days to remove and open up the fire place, knock through to kitchen, and install the double sided burner. The labour plus few bricks and cement was 550 Euros. So if the labourer got 150 Euros I'd be surprised.
When he turned up 3 days later he had a small truck and a helper. They took everything we wanted rid of, were very careful, found some tools accidently left in the rubbish and returned them, and then refused any payment. They will have to return for the rest of the kitchen as we want it until the new one arrives. For sure they can sell some of the stuff but with two 40 km return trips I in the end insisted he took some dosh. But I don't really feel guilty about these guys operating out of the 'sick' autonomo/tax system
Sorry wittering on. Happy Christmas one and all

I've always been told that we cannot join the NHS system here as we don't work and are not yet retirement age. Has that changed now? We PAYG privately which isn't a problem at the moment but there is always the worry that one of us will get something more serious or chronic.Unicorn wrote:Hi
I have been paying taxes, or filing a tax return, since I have been here, much to the derision of some other expats. It did, however, pay off when the law changed vis a vis healthcare for the non retired three years ago. Although I have Sanitas it is a relief to have the back-up of the excellent state system. Particularly for the drugs if, God forbid, I get anything really nasty.
Cheers

It changed in 2012, when the Spanish Government decreed that those who were already registered as residents in Spain before July 2012 (I think it was, although haven't checked the exact date) and were submitting tax returns, would be entitled to register for state healthcare. You need a "legislation letter" as they are called from the DWP in Newcastle to confirm that you are not entitled to healthcare paid for by your home country.Wicksey wrote:

As a general aside to this thread I wonder how many of you have ever considered how little crime (and I'm not just talking about fraud) there woud be if cash didn't exist , and financial transactions were only executed through banks !
Re: BBC2 today
