Expat fate ?
Expat fate ?
Looks like, according to the FT, UK expats will be left dangling in Brexit talks (if they ever start). They report that one of the first offers the UK will make is to secure the rights of EU nationals already in the UK. The EU will reportedly be unable to reciprocate at this time (conveniently forgetting previous assurances otherwise), saying the rights will have to be negotiated in detail for them to have any legal value ! What b******s.
Don't know how solid their source is, but it would not be a surprise. Modern politics whether in the UK or mainland Europe, is a dirty underhand business, where lack of integrity, dishonesty and rampant self-interest are the norm.

Don't forget that the UK and Spain have a reciprocal health care agreement.
Nothing to do with EU membership. So our health care should continue hopefully.
Can't see Spain doing anything significant to prevent us expats who live here and pay our taxes etc from continuing as we are.
Or them doing anything to discourage the large number of UK holiday makers coming here for their holidays.

Parilla,
Of course this problem must be on the minds of most resident expats, including me.
I did actually last week ask a friend who works in a 'Government office' about this and he was of the opinion that we don't have a problem.
In fact he said 'Don't Worry be Happy'...I'm not sure that I'm totally convinced though.
Regards,
Gordon

Re: Expat fate ?
IF the Brexit talks ever start and this current lot are doing it then I expect the end result will be that EVERYONE is "fuc++ed' as you write, coastakid. It will make no difference who you are or where you are, and that includes all points in the UK the outcome will be pants. I've just come back from a week in the UK and inflation is now running at 2.9%, the public sector has not had a pay rise in five years and bankers want to put up interest rates. On balance, we are better off here ... so far ...

Re: Expat fate ?
It was hilarious when John Hammond, in an interview, said that EU citizens in the UK will have the same reduced rights as every other citizen in the UK and that EU law will no longer apply to anyone in the UK. 'Reduced rights'. Reduced! Yes! That's what you voted for you nitwits! I think some of the implications of Brexit are only just vaguely dawning on people. I fell about laughing.

Re: Expat fate ?
I meant JOHN REDWOOD. Sorry. All these mad people are beginning to look and sound alike. It's John Redwood I was thinking of and, to be honest, I've never seen John Hammond read the weather or anything else. He was an invention of mine, mixing up John Redwood and Phillip Hammond. And you think your brain is a mess???

Re: Expat fate ?
I agree wholeheartedly Gerry, they are not going to rock the boat when the British long term expat and tourism influence brings them literally billions per year, why are supposedly mature, reasonable people obsessed with the idea that expats are doomed, nothing radical is going to happen.gerryh wrote:Don't forget that the UK and Spain have a reciprocal health care agreement.

Re: Expat fate ?
I think that's true regarding people who are here now but that doesn't mean it won't change for people wanting to come in the fiture and it will depend on their financial status.
The control Britain gets back also means the EU countries will have more control over who comes in from the UK and although I know that this is a predominately Andalucian forum, people come to other parts of Spain for different reasons including work and this might change significantly .
Working visas will need to be arranged and companies might employ EU citizens to avoid the beauracracy.
