Post Brexit Business Idea
A recent discussion on here about tax and moving to Andalucia made me realise something. As a result of Brexit, British citizens whose income is the UK state pension(even with a little added private pension) will no longer be able to move to Spain if they are not the spouse of an EU citizen.
The minimum income is 26k for 1 person or 33k for a couple, even those who can afford a golden visa will still need a minimum income. Additionally they, I think, will need to purchase private healthcare (open to correction here) I guess Spain could lower the income limit but I guess the authorities have figured out that these income levels represent a point at which an immigrant becomes economically beneficial to Spain. So Brexit has also given Spain control of it's borders.
People still of working age can of course apply for a work visa but unless they have specialist skills no employer will entertain that idea.
So it got me thinking about if something like the Brexit Marriage Bureau would work? We all know there have been businesses like this for Non EU spouses for a long time but up until now it wasn't relative for UK citizens.
I don't want to sound uncouth, but the reality is these arrangements have usually been a foreigner marrying an older EU citizen. Do people think there is a market for younger British citizens wanting to marry an older EU citizen? I suppose there is also arranged marriages solely for the purpose of gaining residency but that is illegal.
Or maybe there is also the market for younger Spaniards who might be interested in an older foreigner? An older foreigner with an income of 20k per year might be attractive to a young Spaniard?
Does anybody have any thoughts on whether they think there is a market for such a business?

I'm sorry I didn't realise canvassing opinion on a business idea wasn't allowed on this forum. If it is not then please delete and could you tell me which rule of the forum I have broken?
Re: Post Brexit Business Idea
Has been going on a long time. Doesn't have to be a young and an old person, students have been doing it for themselves.

Good point, yes I know a few Ozzies who married a lot quicker than they really wanted to just to get a visa in the EU to stay with their relatively recently acquired boyfriend or girlfriend
Do you think though that British students would marry an EU citizen just to stay in the EU? Thinking out loud I guess there will be less and less UK students in the EU now that they cannot go on Erasmus. I guess they also have a ready made partner, if that is the reason they want to stay then there is no reason to pay me a few quid to find them someone to marry.

I recal the days when there wasn't freedom of movement, quite a number of young brits on holiday opted to stay, where there is a will there is a way, living illegaly of course, some got work in bars, others touted tickets luring people into bars and as soon as any police were seen off they shot..Could just be a return to those times. Nowadays there are unsavoury ways of making money out there and some people will exploit it any way they can.

A lump sum savings amount is included in the 26 plus k required. So if you are selling up,especially an ex council house in the south east which will get you a golden visa! or have some savings, inheritance alot will be ok. An issue for some will be at the renewal after the first year as you need double the amount as its a 2 year visa. Then another 2 after that.

Hola,
I'd say it is too early for a marriage scheme to work; a few years down the line then maybe. There is a market for British men to go abroad and get a Philippine etc. wife - but whether the business is viable, who knows.

Has been happening for years in UK. Mainly with foreigners. Seen some in the news where they have been rumbled at the register office.

To be clear this is not sham or illegal marriages. This is an introduction agency ....the marriage bit is up to the couple. These types of businesses have existed for years it's just that now British people are restricted and may seek another way to be allowed to live in Europe. In the same way Chinese and Russians are and they use marriage as a way to legally live in Europe.

Yes I hope it doesn't go that way. Who know where it could end up. Will the police here start checking work permits in bars in the holiday towns? I wonder what they do about the (I am guessing) illegal immigrants selling handbags and working in greenhouses?Pamela1 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 3:59 pm I recal the days when there wasn't freedom of movement, quite a number of young brits on holiday opted to stay, where there is a will there is a way, living illegaly of course, some got work in bars, others touted tickets luring people into bars and as soon as any police were seen off they shot..Could just be a return to those times. Illegal immigrants selling hand bags, working in greenhouses? Do they not get deported if found out? There there must be 100's if not actually 1000's working in the greenhouses in Almeria. The owners i believe are fined 60,000 euros if they are caught employing them which in actual fact they are not employed as such because none have a contract. They are exploited as cheap labour but surely it can't be hard for the police to raid these places, make arrests and fine the owners or do they just turn a blind eye?

Re: Post Brexit Business Idea
You would think there would be deportations of people in Spain who are illegal but I have not seen many cases. I know when people arrive illegally on boats in the south of Spain they are allowed to proceed if there is no accommodation for them. An acquaintance who works in the Policia Nacional fingerprint area tells me that they just fingerprint the new arrivals and let them go on their way if there is no red cross accommodation.
Maybe many working illegally are waiting for their refugee application to be processed. Anyway that is only speculation on my part.

Re: Post Brexit Business Idea
They "lose" or never had paperwork showing where they are from.Çountries cant deport them if theres no proof of their nationality etc. Alot of the illegals are given legal status after certain amounts of time. I guess like an amnestyPamela1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 09, 2021 2:18 pm Illegal immigrants selling hand bags, working in greenhouses? Do they not get deported if found out? Re: Post Brexit Business Idea
Very interesting discussion. Somewhere in all this is the germ of a respectable, legal, viable 'business'.
Spain is a country which, year-on-year, is becoming depopulated by national Spanish people and the Government is worried. Whole villages in some areas are abandoned. or with just a few ancient families left to exist without any hope of things getting better. Young people move away to work. Etc. I think we have discussed this before.
In Extremadura, grants are given to people moving to depopulated villages and setting up a business, especially rural tourism including casas rural. I'm not awake yet, but some form of matching the British person with some money with a local person in an underpopulated place they call 'home' and setting up a relationship and business might be a good thing.
I need to think about this a bit more ...

Actually, I think the above idea is rather different to that of the original poster. Sorry for getting totally side-tracked.

Yes good point a lump sum that covers the length of the visa will suffice I.e. 2 year visa show that you have 52k in the bank. Like you say the problem then is in 2 years time you will have to prove 52k in the bank again. It's not a way I would choose to live my retirement knowing I have to apply for a visa regularly, especially as the visa webpage explicitly states that a visa being issued is still at their discretion even if you can supply all the documents they require. If for whatever reason the Spanish authorities fancy they can just refuse a visa renewal.elusive wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 4:19 pm A lump sum savings amount is included in the 26 plus k required. This was one of the reasons I decided to not settle in Asia long term as I am forever having to play visa games to maintain my residence there and I know that one day the authorities can just say no if they change their policies.
Re the Golden Visa I haven't been able to find any information on the annual income requirements or lump sum to live off, just vague language like you can support yourself. Do you have any idea?

Info on all the visas here and requirements etc.
You become permanent after 5 years so if you can get to that stage you are ok.

We looked at investing in USA for an EB5 visa. Was in the mid 90s. I think the minimum amount was 500 dollars. Some companies had set up a sort of one stop shop for an easy entry. One was investing in a proposed shopping mall, others in a property company etc. I think many were a scam, was a lot of publicity at the time. Suprised to see they are still doing it.
It could be a business idea for Spain, advising Brits who want to emigrate. Hold their hand etc. Here is an example of one advisor for the USA.
