Perseid meteor shower
Perseid meteor shower
Starts tonight running up to the 23 August.
So plenty of opportunity to catch sight of a meteor in the sky.

Re: Perseid meteor shower
lost count how many nights I have sat out at the peak times in August and never spotted a thing. There was a different meteor shower last year, can't remember when it was, but I saw four decent ones that night. No doubt I shall still be out again this year on the fruitless search for shooting stars
Re: Perseid meteor shower
Likewise!
There is alot of new stuff up there orbiting the earth. You might even see a plane or two….

saw the ISS the other night
Re: Perseid meteor shower
There were some Starlink satellites that you could track last year and they were in lines, about 8 or more at a time going along. I can't believe how much stuff there must be up there now. We always see some sort of satellite moving across the sky nowadays. I can't stand outside for long as we get bitten to pieces at our house. It's a nightmare. I usually lie in pool with just my head above the water to watch in August.
Re: Perseid meteor shower
I think the starlink “ trains” were so visible because they hadn’t been aimed at that stage.
Havent seen very many meteors each night until last night. Sat out , head craned back . Saw around half a dozen but have to say they werent that impressive. Might have been the light pollution. A solar farm a few km away has four massive lights on till midnight. Cannot imagine many workers there after dark. Might be solar fa4m equivalent of burning gas off on a rig!
What is impressive is the stuff up there. We saw the space station on its usual orbit. A few minutes later another “ one” almost at right angles. Chinese lab? Who knows.

At the peak, 11,12 and 13th there will be no moon which helps.

Re: Perseid meteor shower
At present (19:40) the sky is quite hazy as it was last night still all eyes to the North East later.
Re: Perseid meteor shower
My OH, who is not a Perseids fan, went outside to turn off the irrigation and saw two last night. I went out a few times and saw diddlysquat. In the past I have sat in the pool for an hour and seen the odd one, but I just didn't fancy it last night. We are plagued by biting insects here so just a minute outside is enough for me and I still get bitten.
On the other hand we did have an earthquake last night. Not sure if anyone else felt it. 4.2 just west of Granada about 11:20 according to the info I have found.

Re: Perseid meteor shower
Yeah i felt the earthquake. sat on a upstairs terrace and the floor and chairs started to vibrate and tables in the living room. Lots of posts from across the axarquia on f.b etc about it
Re: Perseid meteor shower
Just turned on LA1 and the news was on showing damage to houses where the earthquake was. Tiles had come off walls and quite a few cracks in houses too. Makes up for the lack of shooting stars last night.
