Post-Brexit personal import
Can anyone give me a definite answer - if I buy a laptop whilst I am in the UK, presumably not qualifying as UK manufactured, for my personal use as a Spanish resident, do I have to declare it, and what duties/vat would there be?

Hi peteroldracer,
From EU site...............
"You may carry other goods up to a value of EUR 300 per traveller or EUR 430 for travellers by air and sea. Some EU countries apply a lower limit of EUR 150 for travellers under 15."

Re: Post-Brexit personal import
We are just preparing for a visit to UK and the same questions ran through my mind.
Most folk travel with a smart phone and a laptop/tablet so will in all likely hood exceed 430euros.most folk dont carry their proof of purchase. Ie how would they know the laptop hadn't gone to England with you?
Doesn’t help with POR question but the 430 limit is worth knowing.

We travel with 3 phones, 2 iPads and a laptop (fun at security…NOT!), but they are just to use when in the UK, not being left there, and all are in no danger of being thought of as new.
Bringing a brand new laptop of well over the €430 mentioned seems a different kettle of pez, hence the query.

I wonder when they will start pulling people over again in the nothing to declare area in arrivals in the Uk..The area is not staffed, at least it wasn't at Newcastle airport during my last 2 trips.
From what i could see at Malaga arrivals anyone could have had a case full of cheese and no one would have known. So how does it all work now?

Re: Post-Brexit personal import
Many years ago my OH worked for Customs and for a while was "at" LeedsBradford Airport. Only if a flight was being targeted - eg plane full from Tenerife with folk 'forgetting' that only 200 cigs were allowed in rather than the 2000 from Spain - was there any officers at the airport. If someone wanted to declare goods they were supposed to pick up a special telephone and talk to the office in Leeds, when someone might come and examine the goods.

There was always officers in customs during the early years in our local airport, i can not recal a time when there wasn't.Even so it didn't seem to stop people chancing their arm at carrying more ciggies and alcohol than was allowed..

Thanks for the link Enrique, but there is no way I would try to persuade a Spanish Douanista to let me bring a new laptop in, based upon the website of a manufacturers' association!

Is it that much cheaper in the UK? Prices in Spain tend to be similar.

Re: Post-Brexit personal import
It is not just the cost. I really cannot face spending the rest of my days having to use a Spanish keyboard, and have failed to find any store or manufacturer in Spain selling an English keyboard W10 laptop!

Re: Post-Brexit personal import
I can't use an English one now. In France I had a French one which was different again, but I'm used to this now. On my phone I can switch between UK and Spanish keyboards if I wanted as they're only digital ones, although they are more basic than my laptop keyboard.

Same with me Wicksey, I bought a Lenovo ideapad 3 a year ago from Carrefour, 535 euros, imagine my surprise (dumbo me) when I got home and discovered it had (of course) a Spanish keypad, I persevered with it and today would probably struggle to use an English keypad, only problem is I'm now in Finland and some Finnish characters for example an umlaut (a with 2 dots above) are just not available !

Change to UK keyboard in settings and stick some labels on the affected keys.

Re: Post-Brexit personal import
It took me a while to get used to my Spanish keyboard but now I just know automatically where everything is irrespective of what the keys have on them. As for spending £1500 on a laptop, buy a MacBook Pro with a few 'extras'. I travelled with mine to the UK this Summer and was not stopped but if I had been I could have shown work on it dating back several years and stacking up to the present day. I'm not sure i would buy computers, laptops and things in the UK as I live in Spain and I think some guarantees and repairs are only valid in the country of purchase, or some such thing.

Re: Post-Brexit personal import
Interesting...Media Markt want €1129, all the illustrations show English keyboard; Amazon want €979.99 with a choice of Spanish or Portugese keyboard - no English option.
I would never trust MediaMarkt's technical spec, so doubt that they would send an English version.
