Costco

Postby olive » Wed Feb 23, 2022 1:42 pm

Anyone a fan or use them?

2 nd biggest chain after Walmart. Carrefour third.

Apart from having to buy larger packs and the 36 euro a year membership, any other downsides?

We've subscribed for the last 20 odd years and use them a lot. Never knew they were in Spain or we'd have used it there.

They are opening a new one in Málaga, on the site of a former cinema complex.

I usually go to costco about 4 times a year to have a fill up..I used to get carried away and over spend but over time i have come to know what is good quality and good value and what to leave on the shelf.. the shopping list is now very much streamlined...I really like their own kitchen rolls, top quality and a big pack lasts me till i get back there again.

They are knocking the cinema down near the Guadelhorce industrial estate and building the new Costco on hat site. Just off the old airport road.

One has opened here. Just signed up. Petrol there for members is about 20cents per litre cheaper than the supermarkets and up to 30 cents cheaper that many petrol stations.
Those who travel from Bilbao to the South might find it useful to know that there is one just off the motorway, about 3 KLMs from the port in Santurce towards Madrid and another in Getafe to the south of Madrid close to the A4/M40/R4 motorways. giving the opportunity to reduces the petrol costs significantly.

That is some discount on fuel. If there was one near you and you don’t mind using “ supermarket” fuel then that covers your annual subscription.

Every little helps ..as they say.. however I also think that it's important to give some support to the local petrol stations, ....use them or lose them ...?
I've never shopped in Costco, but at the first opportunity I will.

Good point. Our nearest fuel station is 7 km away, if that closed then next nearest is 33 km away.

Supermarket fuel is the thin end of the wedge.

Is there any basis to these opinions that Costco fuel here is low quality? I'm following a sports car forum in the USA, and the opinion on that forum from people who have reason to care is that Costco fuel, at least in the USA, is top shelf. Doesn't mean it's the same here of course, but ...

Carrefour gives you a 8% discount here (redeemable as a quarterly coupon you have to use at carrefour), but even with that discount, the price is just barely (a few cents, if even that) cheaper than the unmanned fuel stations.

When I said supermarket fuel is the thin end of the wedge - I meant in terms of driving independent garages out of business. Something seen in the UK.

I think it is a google ‘ able fact that discount fuel whilst coming from the same refineries doesn’t have the same additives that premium fuel stations have. E.g. Shell, Repsol. I have two cars. One non cheap diesel. The other I wouldn’t dream of putting cheap diesel in. Before the current crisisI even put super diesel in it for long journeys. Might be different if I wasn’t keeping it.

I believe that carrefour uses cepsa fuel - i seem to recall a sign in the window of the petrol station at los patios.

Thank you, that's interesting, and perhaps true too, as the same carrefour card gives you a 4% discount at cepsa (again, redmable as a carrefour voucher every two or three months).
