Yeah, re-reading your original post it's quite different to my experiences as they asked for money for fuel (in El Ingenio car park near petrol station).
It's really bad still though, had someone helped me like that I would have returned it the same day full up and also insisted on buying you a drink or something to say thanks, I think most decent people would though.

RESULT!
We were out this morning, on returning, my can of diesel was on the doorstep.
Two weeks have gone by, but as Silver says, “this is Spain”.
I am so pleased, not so much that I’ve got my can of diesel back, but that my initial instinct that I could trust this chap was correct, I’m also, now, a little embarrassed that I had some doubts about him.
