Which 4 x 4 ?
I need help and advice. Looking to buy a 4x4 soon, but which one. My wife likes the Grand Vitara, I like Freelander. Can anybody help, perhaps through their own experiences. Also, new or 2nd hand, whats the best option ? Thanks.

Freelanders, like a lot of Landrovers have an appalling reliability record.
Buy anything Japanese or possibly Korean. The latest Kia and Hyundai models (Sportage and Tucson) are very good and cheap.
If you want something that will really perform off-road go for any Mitsubishi. For decent off-road performance you need a car with a low ratio gearbox and lockable differential.

It always makes me smile when I see a Pajero - no wonder they don't call them that in Spain. Look up in a decent dictionary if you're not sure what I mean.hillybilly wrote:I had a Mitsubishi Montero (otherwise known as the Pajero in the UK) on hire and loved it.
I would agree though, to stay well clear of Land Rover and go for Japanese or Korean.
Ooops! Couldn't resist checking on the translation. I'll never look at another one in the same way again.hillybilly wrote:It always makes me smile when I see a Pajero - no wonder they don't call them that in Spain. Look up in a decent dictionary if you're not sure what I mean.
Since I gave up hope I feel much better!

4x4
Hi
We have a Toyota hilux and a KIA sorento, both good motors, but the price for the KIA is really good for what you get, it has been voted best towing Veichle, but maybe you don't want it for towing, we had a land rover discovery and a range rover before these, given a choice( forgetting difference in price) I would choose range rover, Kia, toyota, then discovry but its all about money and personal preference really. Kia do give excellent value for money and good warrenty.

The Discovery is the one Landrover that doesn't come at the bottom of the list. In the What Car 2005 reliability survey it came 16th out of 100. The Freelander was 96th.Solysombra wrote:My offering for what it's worth, I've owned a discovery for ten years with barely a hitch, it shakes a bit over 70 but very reliable and more importantly I feel safe in it.
Overall, Landrover been in bottom place of 30 manufacturers for the last 4 years. The top 8 places were Japanese or Korean. The first European car was Skoda!
My Discovery, bought new in 1996 has had the following:
2 new exhausts, 3 new sets of tyres, 1 rear bumper (I managed to back it into a steel bollard in a car park) and 1 engine rebore 2 years ago, If you don't need elegance or style I'd recommend it anytime, having said that it's the only 4 x 4 I've ever owned so I have no yardstick to judge it by, I can only say I'm very happy with it (except when it starts to shake above 70 mph).

Which 4 x 4 ?
Trying to get a price from a dealer for a Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tuscon or Vitara in the Granada - Malaga area is incredibly difficult - admittedly, I'm doing it via e-mil from UK in preparation for late-May visit. Any ideas???
