Postby [email protected] » Sat Jan 27, 2007 10:00 pm

We have just purchased a house in Velez Malaga mainly for holidays, looking for advice and any recommendations for restaurants as we did'nt see many when we were there in December.

Don't know about Velez itself, but you can eat non stop in Torre del Mar. Did you try it?

Thanks for the tip, haven't been to Torre Del Mar yet, but will give it a try. We don't drive in Spain, so I guess we will take the tram.

Take either the tram or bus to Torre del mar - both very regular and cheap.

Torre del Mar is a great place for eating out - many excellent Spanish restaurants plus a good selection of Italian (Italia and Ibiza on Avenida Tore Tore are our favourites), Indian (Taj Mahal in town centre that does a great value Menu del Dia at €6.95 and Natraj beyond the rear of the Police Station) and Chinese (Hong Kong on Calle Larios and Ciudad Sur on the seafront). Most places offer great value 3 course Menu del Dias for around €7-8, and there are innumerable excellent Tapas bars.

Torre is also a good place for buying lighting, furniture and electrical goods etc - there are many small/private shops in the back streets. It also has a great private clinic at Clinica Rincon where there is generally an English speaking GP on duty - we are covered here by our medical insurance.

Like Velez Malaga the market in Torre is on a Thursday.

IF you like fish, there's a really good fish restaurant in Velez itself - La Gamba Dorada. It's in a back street just off the roundabout by Parque de Andalucia. The surroundings aren't brilliant, but it's the best fish restaurant we've eaten in (close second is La Marina in Nerja). They are closed for the whole of January, so we've been trying some others, but on the whole, they aren't as good. I was particularly disappointed with La Cueva in Torre Del Mar. It's enormous and always packed there, so we expected something special, but it was very average. But as Brenda says, there are some good restaurants in Torre. We like the Hong Kong Chinese - and it's not far from the tram terminus

We used to live in Triana just up the road from Velez towards Lake Vinuela. Small restaurant in Trapeche [first on right as you enter village from south] cant remeber the name but he does steaks to die for on the barbie.

Ibiza on Avenida Tore Tore

Brenda, Ibiza was closed last week, and for sale!

My current favourite is Maise Pio, on calle Canon. No english menu, no English spoken, but Andaluz food to diet for!!

Oh what a shame!

It is only about 3 weeks since we were in there and nothing was said about plans to close.

Back to the Italia then.

You could also try 'Florida' restaurant/bar adjacent to the Parque de Andalucia (where the buses stop). They do a menu del dia each afternoon (except Saturdays I think) with several choices for about 6 euros including wine. No menu to look at so you do need some Spanish and not very much choice as it's a set daily meal. But it's packed from 1.30pm and is great value if you like plenty of food and drink at an excellent price. Used by the locals mainly. The cleanliness standards in the loos leave a lot to be desired so anyone a bit fussy is best going to somewhere more upmarket. We like it a lot though because it's good value.

Brenda, maybe its only a ploy not to pay rent during the quite months! or maybe just to see what sort of money they would get for it.
All the chairs and tables were still stacked up outside, so maybe in the spring all will be well again......

Brenda have you check the free papers, street wise is one they ran an article on Velez also just get out and walk in the evening theres nothing like finding a friendly local, ther are many places to eat, mind you most Spanish as you are aware do not eat until late, after 9pm, check which is the busy ones, nothing quite like wondering around and experimenting, pity you do not drive there are many good places to eat all within 10Min's of Velez, you will soon get to know them all enjoy, oh yes to make you feel better we are having a rainy spell at the moment.

Don't like to pour cold water on what you're saying, but exactly the same thing happened to the 'best restaurant in the universe' the El Rio in Benamargosa. Menu del Dia four and a half euros including wine and salad. Fish soup to die for. Husband and wife team. The husband, monosyllabic till you got to know him, looked like a refugee from a punk band fallen on hard times, waiter and barman, wife in the kitchen. They split up. I was in a state of severe shock for some time.

If you can get a lift or take a cab, try Chez Spice at lake Vinuela a very good indian rest with a great view of the lake.
If you can get there, Brensons Bistro at Canillas de Aceituno, great international food, with sunday roast on the menu on a "can you guess " a sunday.
