Thanks for that. It's received mostly excellent reviews on Amazon so I have ordered a used copy.

Rafiki, I don't think that is the same video. It has the Granada logo on it and the one I am talking about was definitely made by the BBC and was a series of six one hour programmes.

Yes I noticed that but I was then convinced by the first reviewer who mentions that it is 6 hours long which fits with your description of it being a six-part series. However it would be strange for BBC 2 to air a Granada production I suppose.

I don´t think it can be the same book! The one I have was published in 1996. I bought it last year in the book/music shop in La Cañada, Marbella. I think its called something like Fnac?

If it really is worth what you say I shall be flogging it pronto!! :D

Yes you are rigth, sorry. I hadn't looked at the reviews but it certainly fits the description and the clincher is that Frank Finlay is the narrator as one of the reviewers says.

Perhaps Granada bought the publishing rights for producing the video from the BBC because I don't think they (the BBC) were into selling tapes and videos of their programmes at that time.

Pity its not currently available though.

Thanks for correcting the Gerald Brenan link. I got them mixed up somewhere along the line.

civil war

Postby Mariposa » Fri Feb 02, 2007 8:07 pm

Has anyone seen the reproduction newspaper articles published recently?-I spotted them in the bus station but didn't have time to peruse them thoroghly. Not sure whether they represent both sides, but seemed interesting . What I don´t understand is how, given family pressures etc at the time, how people ended up with completely opposing views, and how they knew enough about what was going on to choose their politics or was it entirely due to other pressures eg torture etc ?How many people switched sides I wonder ? How would any of us deal with this now, if savagery is on both sides? When are we going to accept that perhaps there are no absolute answers offered by political interests?

Kevin 77 ... seems a shame you feel like this ... all I can say is that I have had the time of my life this last year researching the history of the Axarquia ... not just sitting indoors on the net and reading books and journals etc but going out to try to find places I never even knew existed .. and talking with local people about their lives here during the last 50/60 years ... absolutely fascinating, humbling and moving ... you are missing so much ...
and the very least now is that I can take my visitors to places few people know about!

Not really. Since Granada lost their ITV franchise they are an independent production company and have made several programmes that have been aired in the Beeb.

I don't know whether or not they made this video, but they could have done.

Remember that everything that Fred Astaire did, Ginger Rogers did too; except she did it backwards and wearing high heels!

But this was made and shown in the early 1980s when Granada was one of the kings of the regional ITV companies. I don't know when the video was produced though.

you are missing so much
What I meant Gav is that there was nothing new in teapots article, nothing we couldn't easily find out ourselves. It remains his interpretation of the events.
Do we know his writings are impartial, or are they politically biased?
What are his sources?
Is he trying to promote a book? Or does he just need more hits on his site.
I am just a bit uneasy about someone who suddenly joins the forum and posts a link to his own website.

I think you may have misread the date. It says 16 Sept 1996 and gives RRP of £9.99 which is a pound dearer than the price shown on my copy. Never used Amazon so puzzled why anyone would pay £47.99 upwards for a paperback priced at £9.99 and still readily available, well here in Spain anyway? :?

Yes, sorry. It does read 1996: http://tinyurl.com/2ugx3t second item down. Amazon have crossed through the RRP of £9.99 though and they don't have stock themselves so I guess it's out of print.

UPDATE

I just phoned Ewell Books in Surrey (specialises in military books). They are advertising one of the copies on Amazon. Very helpful guy. He did have 2 copies, just sold one (ex library) for £40. He checked the UK national s/h book database and there are only two copies available in UK at the moment. He said it is a rare book and mentioned that it is regarded as the best book on the civil war.

a quick reply

Postby teapotmonk » Sat Feb 03, 2007 5:56 pm

Im sorry Kevin77 you feel so antagonistic towards me. Ive been writing about spain for over 10 years now - and no, Im not trying to sell a book. Not everything in life has to have a commercial motive.

I just enjoy writing about spain, living in spain and working in spain. If that makes you suspicious then I believe thats something you need to look at.

Regarding other posts, there have been some really excellent accounts of the civil war - Hugh Thomas and famous Ronlad Fraser are amongst the more well known. Brenans Spanish Labyrinth is excellent, but I have to say that it was part of the required reading on my Spanish Degree course, and I found it very complex. Its a detailed look at the 2nd republic rather than the war itself with an intimate account of the political shifts from the abdication of the monarch to the outbreak of the war.

But very detailed. Not to be recomended as a general intro.

There is an excellent pictoral guide to the civil war in Spanish...an amazing book ...not expensive, hardback on easily available with an introduction by Paul Preston. Its called Guerrra civil - espanola by Jesus de Andres and Jesus Cuellar. If you want to practice your spanish and look at an amazing visual history....then check this out in your nearest bookshop or El corte Ingles book dept. Costs about 15 euros.
