Missing posts

Postby Beachcomber » Thu Dec 04, 2008 12:42 am

I hit 5.000 posts the other day now I'm back down to 4.200. Surely Admin haven't trawled through all of my posts and removed nearly a thousand of them. Perhaps it was because I didn't go to the Guru's dinner. Image

Ah, solved. All posts for 2004 and most of the first half of 2005 seem to have disappeared. Not just mine, everyone's. Admin must have been having a clear out.

I noticed I lost my "guru" status a couple of days ago...and that was AFTER attending the gurus' dinner! Though interestingly I can still access the gurus' den...

This is what Admin told me.

"The post counts have been adjusted to reflect the number of actual posts which are in existence on the noticeboard database. Posts made which have since been deleted will not count to the post total."

Does that quote actually make sense??

What is the noticeboard database?

I think they have just lost a load of posts. If you do a search on a subject or a username no posts show up for 2004 and very few for the early part of 2005.

It seems clear to me. They have cleared out some of the older posts from the forum database to free up space so that will affect the post count.

But what is the noticeboard database or is that what we would think of as the forum database? Anyway, if they have cleared out old posts surely the post count would have been adjusted automatically.

It depends on whether it is a counter that is incremented every time you make a post, or more likely, it just scans the database for posts in your name and reports the total.

Oh no so the one liners to get into Amigos Lounge could lose out, que lastima.......

So why don´t admin just say what you said Sid instead of gobbleydegook government type speak?

In the new noticeboard admin area, where admin and the Rotweillers stalk evil doers, we happened across a shiny new button marked "Resynchronise post counts - Only existing posts will be taken into consideration. Pruned posts will not be counted."
Disliking clutter and superfluity, we clicked it and a great leveling took place.

Your description reminds me of the warning when entering Avanced Firefox Tweaking 'Here be dragons' and you have to promise to be careful before entering because it's easy to mess that up as well.

But I thought that post counts were reduced when posts were deleted by Admin anyway and there are definitely no posts left for 2004. :?

So we have all been pruned.
Now I know how a rose bush feels :o

It would seem however from reading Admins post, that posts can be removed, but the 'post count' does not have to be updated. For those who size is important :D
