Bid to Make the Alhambra One of the New Wonders of the World

A human chain of approximately 2,500 people will join hands around the Alhambra Palace in Granada on Sunday 29th April, to embrace the monument and support it in its bid to become one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. The Alhambra is one of 21 monuments which voters around the world have chosen as the finalists. The final list of 7 is announced in Lisbon on 7th July.

Great, we will be over there and hopefully make it.

P.S. Will there be free tapas?

P.P.S. Will this put house prices in the area up, if it succeeds?

couldnt be much higher around the Alhambra and Albayzin! I imagine there will be a substantial amount of the usual Spanish Chaos trying to conduct proceeding in getting the human chain joined up

They are trying to organise the event. To take part you need to inscribe on the 27 and 28 of month. They are putting a tent up in Plaza Nueva for this.Everyone who inscribes wil be given a number to wear and so they know where to stand .If they manage to get 2500 people each person will occupy a metre as the perimeter measures 2500 metres.A line will be drawn with a number on the floor. They will also give a free hat and t-shirt!
If more than 2500 people turn up they wil form a second circle!

What is the advantage of it becoming a wonder of the world?

It is a competition with thirty nominated monuments around the world being voted for. More info at http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php

The ring around the Alhambra is a publicity stunt for the local media to encourage the local population to vote for the Alhambra and rig the vote.

It is more of a marketing exercise than a genuine competition with the Andalucia tourist board spending 600.000 Euro on the project. Unfortunately a third world country won't be able to afford that degree of promotion.

You have to vote for the seven wonders..not just one..maybe this will compensate those third world countries.

Perceived kudos; great publicity; great advertising copy.

Given that making it a World Heritage Site increased its popularity to the degree that it is now necessary to book well in advance in order to visit it, whereas previously you could just turn up, I don't get it. They can't increase the visitor throughput anyway can they?

Ah..them were the days
They certainly were.
I have only been to the Alhambra once and will never go again.
Going through those patios was fantastic. Each one was more fabulous than the last, so that it didn't seem possible that it could get any better, but each time it did, culminating in the Patio of the Lions. I found this experience so overwhelming that I sat in a chair and burst in to tears, much to the consternation of my travelling companion. Well I am a bloke and blokes don't do that sort of thing do they?
I have been to many fantastic places round the world and no other building has had that effect on me. The experience was so profound that it is urepeatable.
However this Seven Wonders of the Modern World seems a nonsense notion to me. There are so many more (uncountable) than seven out there.

Anyroads - probably could not find the b*****y thing as all the 256 roundabouts at Basingstoke look the same and all the signs have been vandalised by displaced Chelsea supporters.
