Flamenco shows

Could anyone recommend somewhere to go to watch flamenco and possibly have a reasonable meal at the same time?
We are going to be in Estepona and don't mind driving up to around half and hour or so.

Also, anywhere else recommended to go for a good evenings entertainment, dinner shows etc.

The Rat Pack show is on weekly at an Hotel in Estepona. I don't think it's a dinner show, though believe you need tickets to get in, at this time of year you can probably pay at the door.

I suspect this post will generate arguments about "true" flamenco versus "ersatz" tourist type flamenco. But if you want to find what we have as the nearest thing to "true" flamenco without going to the Triana area of Sevilla, there is a bar in Gaucin (Estepona 50 minutes) called La Taberna who have impromptu "shows".

As to be expected, it starts at midnight(ish) and goes on until they're all flamenco'd out.

In Estepona (and throughout Spain) you have "Pena Flamenca". Google it for info.

There's one in Estepona. The Tourist office will tell you where. We went a year or so ago. It is a club for flamenco aficianados. You have to pick the right night as they also do other events. Costs peanut and you can eat there. I found the whole experience fantastic. The atmosphere when that fella gathered himself up an launched into a moving (but incomprehensible) song was electric. But that could just be me as I'm a sucker for anything performed with passion. May leave others cold.

As Katie said we went to the one at Le Castel and enjoyed it. I think my post is in the entertainment section.

Actually Trooperman et al, my experience of the "true" is not in Triana but in a tiny bar just across the Plaza de Santa Cruz from the "tourist" twice nightly show, as it happens next to the Irish Embassy. This small bar only opens if at all around 23 to midnight but if it does and if the "locals" are in the mood it is incredible and really get going around 0100. Often the real performers from many of the "shows" come to this bar to chill out and enjoy the night, guitars are picked up as and when people fancy, no stage exists in the bar and whoever feels like it jumps up and dances. If you happen to be there on a good night they are literally tripping over your feet as it is a tiny bar in terms of dimensions but a huge bar in terms of character. The one thing is that you cannot predict a good night in advance, it is all a case of pot luck, but then this is Andalucia.

The nightly show at the Casino at Torrequebrada (Benalmadena) is very good. The optional dinner probably isn't worth the extra cost though. Bookable through any travel agent on the CDS, transport provided from all major resorts.

I agree Miro, the Torrequebrada provides a great evening out. Have been a few times and as the show doesn´t start until 10.30 pm you do have time to eat elsewhere beforehand. You can book direct with the Torrequebrada Hotel. Google it and look at the website for a preview. Its not just flamenco, the first part is cabaret/international dance of a high standard.

Thanks for that - we're taking friends with us who like a good night out, but not keen on just eating or propping up bars, and we're getting a bit old and chubby for clubbing!!!! So this type of entertainment would be ideal.
I think we'll try both El Castel and the Casino as we're there for 9 days. Any idea of the cost for the shows?

I'll answer my own question as I just checked the hotel details for the Casino. Meal and the show is €69 and the show alone is €35 including TVA.

I still can't find anything on Google about El Castel though perhaps I'm not spelling it right?

I doubt you'll find El Castel on the web - most of their advertising is through leaflets on cars! Unfortunately I haven't got one to hand - and the ones outside will be too wet to read - but you'll find the place about halfway between Estepona and Sabinillas, slightly set back on the left hand side of the road.
