flamingos

Postby swerve » Tue Apr 29, 2008 1:28 am

Flamingos

The lake at Fuente de Piedra, recent rain has increased the water level to 28 cm, 2cm below the minimum level required by the birds. Also, over two or three days the number of birds on the lake has increased from 260 to 1300. Environment observers have seen sudden egg laying activity commence so it seems more than likely that breeding will go ahead this year.

Take some strong binoculars with you, they are a long way off. Oh and on the way back pay a visit to the Donkey Refuge, makes a whole day out complete or vice versa!!!

How long would it take to drive from Malaga to the lake?
If coming from Estepona, would it be easier to drive to Malaga and then inland, or are there any other recommended routes?
Perhaps via Ronda?

Malaga to Antequera would be quicker via motorway then head for Fuente de Piedra. The route from the coast via Ronda is horrendous and takes quite a while because of all the hairpin bends on the way.

Did you know you can plan routes on www.viamichelin.es
I used to be indecisive but now I´m not so sure.

Very unfortunate. The flamingoes have left, leaving their eggs behind. We won't have any baby flamingoes this year. Again the lack of rain to blame.

How sad. Have they really all gone for the year?

Teba has nicked the flamingos!

On the road from campillos to Teba/Ardales lakes on the left hand side, before you reach the right hand turn to Teba, they have enlarged/created a lake that is fed from newish looking drainage channels. This is now full of flamingos and other wading birds. Deliberate attempt to lure them away from Fuente de la Piedra or nature finding a way?

I'd like to think it's nature finding it's own way. Keep us updated if you see them again and I hope to go and have a look when I'm over in 13 days time (not that I'm counting).

Avellana, really interesting report. Particularly the numbers of birds by year. I haven't been there for a few years but heard there was some building, could this have any implications?

Mirandamac, sorry won't be over that way for a while but they looked pretty happy with their new home...so fingers crossed for when you are here. The conspiracy theorists among us may suspect Teba ayuntamiento of indulging in a bit of eco-terrorism to boost its eco-tourism
