HOTEL IN MADRID

Anyone know of a decent hotel in Madrid which is near the center but not in a "no go area"!

We stayed at the Travelodge Torrelaguna http://www.travelodge.co.uk/search_and_ ... tel_id=271 It is a few miles out of the centre but in a pleasant area and the bus stops right outside which takes you right into the centre. We got it for less than 20 euros for two nights which made it very good value!

You would struggle to get much more central than Hotel Plaza Mayor. We stayed here a few years ago and it was very acceptable. More a hostal than a hotel, the service, breakfast and room were fine.

Travelodge in Torrelaguna is pretty central. The price isn't bad either and as already mentioned the bus stop is outside the hotel and will take you to the Puerta del Sol in 15 minutes. If you need anything there is also a supermarket opposite.

We usually go to the Rex or Emperador in Gran Via. Next to metro station (Callao) and a very short walk from Plaza de España and Sol. Three star hotels but clean and very well located.
If you´re arriving by train or plane, get a hotel close to the metro and then buy a 1/2/3 day tourist go as you please metro ticket.

for good reasonably cheap and in tapa land (barrio de las letras) I recommend Hostal Persal. Not a hotel as such but plenty good enough for most people.

We have stayed at the Jamyc in the Plaza de las Cortes a couple of times. Cheap, cheerful and basic but very central, opposite the Grand Hotel, just down the road from the Cortes and just around the corner form the Thyssen museum. It has terrible reviews on Trip Advisor but you get what you pay for.
Let's go Brandon!

Medio Dia, directly opposite Atocha station and with a metro stop right outside, although IMO, it's a nice easy walk to the centre.

I don't stay in chains, Mchotels, I don't like the corporate "feel". The Medio Dia is a bit frayed around the edges, but I like that, it is cheapish, has bags of character and the rooms are clean & large.
