Best way to take a car radiator across to Spain

Postby Devils Advocate » Fri Jun 10, 2011 12:01 pm

Think I've made my mind up but just checking for piece of mind. Noticed a small weep in the core of the radiator on car in April whilst we were over there.....out again in July and expect weather to be scorching so don't want to risk it popping on the top of Maroma or somewhere equally hideous. Priced one up in Velez but it had a zero too many in the price for my liking

So I've just bought a new one which I've got in front of me now.......Monarch don't seem to want to pick up the phone....so...

1) It would, with the removal of a few plastic bits fit in a legal sized cabin bag.......I think that could be dodgy checking it in though.

2) It will deffo fit in a hold case but Mrs says it has to be in mine (along with the curtain fabric/deep fat fryer and humungous tub of ant powder) leaving me room for one T shirt :|

3) Wrap it up and weight it in at check in as a seperate parcel....done that before and it was grief.

I'm favouring option 2 as I've 3 shirts already in Spain.......will the airline quibble about it being in the hold case?.....as I say I can't get through to Monarch this morning so thought an ask to you frequent flyers may nail it for me.

Many thanks chaps

What's the parcel service always recommended on here? Could you send it to someone out there before you go, or get someone to send it you when you are there? Sorry, best I can do, not really experienced in taking a rad on holiday with me! :lolno:

Espana.

Took me the first week of the hoiday and 3 tanks of fuel to track it down  ........Monarch are still not talkng to me

If it fits in a 'legal' cabin bag, then I see no reason why you shouldn't take it in the cabin bag. I've taken a load of 'strange' items and never had a problem.
It's not a prohibited item and its not fluid, so no problem!
I would have no hesitation in taking it. (that's a statement, not an offer  )

You're a good lad Enrique, but honestly. If I took a can of that over and the rad popped its cork in the middle of nowhere SWMBO would make the rest of my holiday horrible :) ..............get a new one and there's no comebacks.........apart from the gravel rash and sunstroke fitting it

As someone who has worked in the business, Radweld /Barrs and any other such products are purely a "get you home solution". They should never be thought of as a permanent cure. They are virtually liquid sticky rubber to fill cracks, weeps, porous tubes. nada mas
Buy new for piece of mind.

Try dropping a raw egg into the leaky radiator it is supposed to stop leaks.

In 1980 I was doing the grand tour of Europe. First (of many) problems was a radiator leak in Northern France. Bought an egg and two beers at a cafe. It did a further year before being sold on that repair.

No one was more surprised than me.

I've got the new rad as I said but now find it won't fit in the case  .....working on that one as I type.

As for the egg in radiator trick  ....only tried it once when I had my first car back in the 1920's :D .........put one in and rad still pis5ed hot rusty water all over the place.......made a cracking souffle on the front grill though
