Casarabonela

Postby RichardCoeurdeLion » Wed Apr 18, 2012 2:13 pm

I like taking a drive up from the San Ped/Estepona areainto the hills to old villages.

I picked up the name of this place in a post in the restaurants section.

It looks like a pleasant place.

Anyone been?

I've been a couple of times. Once when the ferIa was on - great atmosphere and very popular. We went again on a Sunday. It's a typical pueblo blanco and has a small square on a steep hillside. There are some nice restaurants and bars around the square. There are also some great views down the Guadalhorce valley. Certainly worth a visit.

It's also the place that Rick Stein based himself for the filming of the kitchen scenes in his Spanish series.

Cheers

Paul

It's a charming village in the Sierra de las Nieves, famous for it's feria lasting 3 days during the last weekend of July and the Rondelles in December when the Virgen de las Rondelles is taken through the village to bless all the water springs the area is famous for.rounded off with churros in the village square. It's a very Moorish village as it has a Moorish fort on the site of Roman one and the 'streets' themselves are very narrow. The villagers themselves are nicknamed 'Los Moriscos' as theirs was one of the last villages to succumb to the 'Reyes Catolicos' and the return of Christianity.
The views from the square the the Town Hall sits are amazing.

I'm back from my trip now.

The first three days were wet, so I stayed at coast level. First sunny day I went to Casarabonella via some other Pueblos. It was well worth the effort.

I'm going to post a full trip report on on the Tip Advisor Costa del Sol and I'll let you know when that's done.
