Anyone been affected by the new airport tax ?
Holidaymakers in Spain this summer are facing a surprise new airport tax imposed by the Spanish government as it tries to balance its books.
Some airlines are passing the new departure tax on to passengers, even if they booked their flights months ago.
Some passengers have received emails telling them either to pay an extra charge of up to seven euros (£6) per person - or to cancel their flights.
Other airlines are deciding whether to absorb the cost themselves.
The budget airline Ryanair said Spain's 2012 budget, passed into law at the end of June, obliged airlines to pay increased taxes.

Next there will be a French style tax on expat 2nd homes!!!!

Re: Anyone been affected by the new airport tax ?
I booked flights for my son in June - he flies next week. Email from Ryanair has not confirmed whether the charges will be retrospective. It advises that if the spanish Government are insisting on retrospective paymet then they may be passed on. If this happens you can opt for a full refund instead - though why you would do that because of an extra £6 I cannot imagine.
You can spend, minutes, hours, days, weeks or even months over-analyzing a situation; trying to put the pieces together, justifying what could've, would've happened - or you can just leave the pieces on the floor and move the f**k on.

Maybe they think I have already paid enough 23 euro to Manchester, I won't complain if I have to pay another 6

OH flying to LBA on Monday has still not had an email from Ryanair to say extra charge. Will have to see what happens. €6 will hardly break the bank anyway.

LBA - Leeds Bradford
Question. Thought the tax was only going up by about 29 cents from Malaga. Assume those being charged 6 euros must be flying from Madrid or Barcelona.

I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!
Re: Anyone been affected by the new airport tax ?
Just had an email from Ryanair notifying us that our card will be debited with the new Spanish tax
Re: Anyone been affected by the new airport tax ?
Same here.
It's going to cost me an extra €1.92 per person from Malaga.
Cheers

Same here Gerry,
I did wonder why flying from Barcelona and Madrid were so much more at 8.95e and 9.12e.

Got an email from Ryanair yesterday:
Dear Customer,
The Spanish 2012 budget was passed into law on Saturday 30 June, as a result all airlines are obliged, with effect from 1 July onwards to collect increased Spanish airport departure taxes from all passengers booked on flights after that date.
In accordance with Ryanair's General Terms and Conditions of Travel (Article 4.2.2) we hereby advise passengers that we will debit passengers for the increased airport departure tax imposed by the Spanish government for all flights departing from Spain which were booked before the 1st July 2012 for travel from the 1st July onwards. These monies will be debited automatically from the payment card used at the time of booking.
If you are not willing to accept this additional charge you may cancel your flights and apply for a full refund of your unused airfare, however you must do so by Friday 13th of July, otherwise your payment card will be charged.
You may apply for a refund of your Spanish flight by clicking on the below link:
http://schchng.ryanair.com//r.asp
Please see below confirmation of the charges, per person, departing from Spain.

I find it amazing that they should go to such lengths to get back 3.84 euros!

3.84 euros doesn't sound much on its own, but multiply that by, say, a million or more passengers and it becomes a sizeable sum. Ryanair aren't the only ones clawing it back from passengers, and quite rightly so.Trigger wrote:Got an email from Ryanair

Re: Anyone been affected by the new airport tax ?
I've just received the following from BMI baby
The Spanish Authorities recently announced an increase in departure tax on all flights leaving from Spanish airports on or after 1st July 2012.
As a result, the tax has risen on flights departing from Barcelona by £7.00 per person and by £1.50 per person departing from all other Spanish airports (or local currency equivalent).
If you made a booking with bmibaby on or after 4th July 2012 then your flight already includes the increase in tax. So no further action is required.
If you made a booking before 4th July 2012 then regrettably we will be debiting the card used to make your booking with the applicable taxes outlined above. We will start this process from week commencing 23rd July 2012.
Please note in order to travel this additional tax must be paid. Click here to view the terms and conditions.

Re: Anyone been affected by the new airport tax ?
It is a departure tax so I guess you could still be charged. Also depends on who you are flying with as some airlines are absorbing the tax, although I don't see why they should.
