New Daily Train Service to El Chorro and Ronda

Postby masterob » Thu Jul 12, 2012 11:29 pm

Renfe have just introduced a new daily service between Malaga and both El Chorro and Ronda. It is now possible to spend a reasonable amount of time at either location and get back the same day. Previously it was impossible to get to either without having to spend a night away.

The train departs Málaga MZ station at 10.05, stops at Álora at 10.30 and arrives at El Chorro at 10.43 and Ronda at 11.52.

The return train leaves Ronda at 16.55, leaves El Chorro at 18.02 arriving in Álora at 18.15 and Málaga MZ at 18.47.

I trip I can recommend.

Wow, thanks for that.
It is a journey we have always wanted to do but was never practical until now.
Does the train stop at Cartema Estacíon? That would be even easier for us.

Great tip, thanks. Sounds like a nice day out, for the train ride alone. Any idea of the cost of the return trip?
Don't worry about what people think, they don't do it very often

I'm afraid not but you can take the Cercanias that leaves Cartama at 10.02 arriving Álora at 10.19. Time for a coffee in the station cafeteria before continuing.

On the way back a longer wait at Álora for the 18.55 to Cartama.

Driving to Álora and parking there (plenty of free space) is probably easiest.

Rob is right, parking at Alora estacion is very easy and you don't have to worry about missed connections. Oh for the days when the Madrid train used to stop there as well!! Progress innit :silent:

As country boy says, from Málaga it's €13.35 each way to Ronda and €5.60 to El Chorro. From Álora it's €10.20 and €2.45 each way. Less 40% if you have a tarjeta dorada.

Yes you can, fare €8.80 each way. You pay on the train.
I didn't give all stops but these are they-

RONDA , ALMARGEN-CANETE LA REAL, CAMPILLOS, BOBADILLA, EL CHORRO, LAS MELLIZAS, ALORA and
MALAGA.

Same stops the other way around. You can use the train to travel between any two stops.

Masterob, I don't seem to be able to get it on the Renfe site. Ronda isn't listed in the drop down menu. I also tried the Malaga Cercanias menu.
Help!

The renfe site isn't the easiest to get around! The service is part of the media distancia routes.

1. In the site, click upper left horarios y precios, that opens a new page, click centre right ver todos las estaciones which gives a full list of rail stations.
2. Select from the alphabetical list the departure and arrival stations and also enter the date of travel . That should get you to the page that details the service.
3. Taking Málaga - Ronda you will see there is just the one train 13057MD. Click on that number and you get the stops. Click precios for fares and on prestaciones for what services there are on board.
4. On the same page click seleccione trenes del trayecto inverso for the return Ronda - Málaga service. Dia antes gives details of the previous day and despues the next day. In this case the times are the same every day.

Hope this helps.

postscript. country boy beat me to it!

It's a Gold Card available to anyone age over 60 years (and certain disabled people over 18). Costs €5.05 per annum and gives various discounts. You buy them at the stations. The discounts are:

AVE-Long Distance - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday a 40% discount . Friday, Saturday and Sunday it's 25% .

Middle Distance Conventional (e.g. The Malaga - Ronda service) - 40% discount on all trains, days and routes.

Avant - 25% from Monday to Friday. 40% Saturday and Sunday.

In suburban (cercanias) - 40%. every day.

The discount is not additional to another offer, such as on-line discounted fares unless specifically stated.

Thanks Masterob

with tarjeta dorada the price is €8.05 each way, so it is well worth spending the €5.05 to get the tarjeta. It only took me a few minutes to get one at Malaga MZ station and I was able to use it straight away. Only needed passport.

Colinm...when you re-new it next year, just show the nice person this years version and it takes no time at all....you even get to keep your old card number. It will be dated from the date you re-new it so don't go too soon in advance!

We intend to give the new service a test run on Tuesday next so will report back!
