Ojen, Marbella
Ojen, Marbella
We are planning to visit Ojen (near Marbella) one morning soon. There are 2 places we would like to see: The Olive Oil Museum [/b]and The Ojen Wine Museum. The problem is we can't find out the opening days or times, or even if they still exist! I have looked online with no joy - as the phone number given is no longer in service; I have phoned Ojen town hall and asked, but they were no help and directed me to the (supposed) number for the Tourist Office, but that number is also unobtainable! I'm at a loss as to what to try next - so would very much appreciate it if anyone has any information.

Museo Molino del Aceite de Ojén (Ojén Olive Oil Mill Museum)
Las Charcas, s/n
29610, Ojén
Malaga
Andalusia
Spain
Phone (+34) 952 881 216
From another site circa 2010...............
"There also used to be a wonderful wine museum here, but sadly the recent economy problems, has forced its closure."
Although other sites talk about the Mill being open.

All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

When in Ojen be sure to look at the inscribed tablet on the outside of the church in the cental square.
There's a moving poem written in a slightly different version of the spanish I know. It's about the futility of war.
I wrote it down, posted it on here and quick as a flash a member recognised it as work by an eminent spanish poet and gave me the translation

If you go up to Ojen (15mins and a world away from Marbella), have a look at the church in the plaza.
Tablet on the wall outside with inscription that reads:-
Senor
La guerra es mala and barbara
La guerra, odiada por las madres, las almas entigrece,
Mientras la guerra pasa,
quien sembra l tierra
Quien segra la espiga
Que junio amarillece
Senor, no la guerra!
Had a go at translating
Sir
War is bad and barbaric
War, hatefull for mothers, the soul(?) ?????
While the war continues, who sows the land
Who reaps the wheat(?)
What does june love(?)
Sir, not war!
Can anyone tidy it up?
Also in Ojen, don't miss the wine museum. Apart from lots of stuff to sample, there is a good range of quality pottery at reasonable prices.
You should be able to locate the replies if you go back to the original thread

While in Ojen, if you manage to spare some time you could also try to visit Serrania de Ronda. There you will find Refugio de Juanar which is a popular hotel for tourists and hunters. The place is basically a hunting reserve where you'll find many wildcats, ibex and eagles:)

Re: Ojen, Marbella
The grammar looks strange in that quote, so looked up the original, and not vastly different, but it makes more sense. It was by Antonio Machado, born in Sevilla, and I can remember seeing references to him in Baeza, he was a school teacher there. Interestingly (well for me, at least! ) entigrecer doesn´t appear in the RAE, it was a word coined by Machado.Rick Gale wrote:I found my original post from 2007.

¡Señor! La guerra es mala y bárbara; la guerra,
odiada por las madres, las almas entigrece;
mientras la guerra pasa, ¿quién sembrará la tierra?
¿Quién segará la espiga que junio amarillece?
Señor, ¡no a la guerra!
Regards, Frank

Yes I would recommend it. Never stayed there but have eaten there a few times. One of the most stunning settings in Andalucía. Great for walkers, lots of eagles, mountain goats etc. It was originally a hunting lodge and I think it is now run as a co-operative after some problems in the 90's. Has a bit of an air of neglect but in a nice waygerryw80 wrote:While in Ojen, if you manage to spare some time you could also try to visit Serrania de Ronda. The wine museum (if it's still open) is basically a shop in an old building. Interesting but commercial with some good speciality produce. For 10€ each we had a tasting of 3 Málaga wines and a tapa of cheese.
Some photos here of local walks.
