Up to 5 hours delay getting INTO Gibraltar this morning due to Spanish Police checking each vehicle and all documents.
If this continues it could hurt Gibraltar`s economy.

According to the Spanish tv today the checks are because of increased smuggling....into Gib? I think not

You've got to admit it's great politics. No one has mentioned Rajoy's corruption for over a week now. The papers and TV have simply dropped all mention of what is really going on in Spain and the REAL problems while everyone's agog about this side-show. Ho Hum.

Not read the papers today lavanda  Rajoy and his bunch of crooks take the first 3 headings in the nationals. The 4th is that house sales are down again.

On the Spanish news tonight one Spanish lady put the blame totally with Rajoy. I bet Morrisons takings have dropped!

It is stated that Gibraltar is (was?) Morrisons most profitable store. Would easily survive though with locals as there is no competitors. They would just get shot off the Spanish staff.

Interesting to see that in recent days the Spanish TV news coverage has increasingly included interviews with La Linea residents who work in Gib, with them basically saying that the Spanish government should lay off and let them continue earning a living.

I thought this article in the Atillagraph summed up the historical reasons why the Gibraltarians are not going to simply throw in the towel just because the Guardia decided to delay the traffic in and out of the Rock:

Let's hope that cooler heads will prevail over the coming weeks so that the ordinary people on both sides of the frontier can get on with their lives in peace.

Interesting article in that link Terry.
It said the civilian population was evacuated during the war.
Where did they go...does anyone know?

Nimrod asked...
''Where did they go...does anyone know?''

First Casablanca, then UK, but in between a very complex situation arose with a lot of diplomatic wrangling and a big problem with the French Navy, which is a very dark period.
I could write several pages about this, but anyway I've answered your question, I hope ?

Gordon

Thanks Gordon
Very interesting,so I googled on.
The evacuees went on to Britain,Madeira and Jamaica.
The French didn't acquit themselves well(no surprise there then) when they were re evacuated from Morocco.
I guess blowing up their fleet didn't help.

Edit
Reading on further there was a German plot to capture The Rock through Spain, with or without Spanish consent, which would have altered the course of the war.
All stuff new to me.

Nimrod,
Yes it is really interesting and regretfully so many people just relate to Gib as a place for cheap shopping and sleezy bars.
I have many memories of Gib in the 1960's, some good , some bad, so for me it is a special place.

There was a good film made about the Italian frogmen working from a mother ship in the bay about the time of the evacuations, sorry the film title will not come into my head, but good film.!

Gordon

Gordon,
That'll be "The Silent Enemy"
Laurence Harvey as Buster Crabbe.
Also Sid James.
I've seen this a few times.
I was brought up on war films,my Mum was an usherette at The Gaumont,1953-1960, and from an early age I was watching British films from the back row during the day and the projection box at night.
She packed fish paste sandwiches for me and my brother and we got A Kia -Ora orange during the break.
Good old days!

I have a copy of 'The Captain's Paradise', and Alec Guiness film from the 50's, with Celia Johnson. he plays a, captain who travels from Gib to Tangiers and back (taking an awfully long time!) and has a prim wife in Gib and an exotic Girlfriend in Morocco. It s funny and bits of Gib are recognisable.

There is also 'La Roca' an award winning Spanish documentary in Spanish and English, made, I think, last year, about the closing of the frontier by Franco and the torn families.
